Milwaukee, March 10: Memorial For Juan Carlos Ruiz

On behalf of the board, staff, and members of Voces de la Frontera, it is with great sadness we write to inform people that a great leader in the immigrant rights movement has passed away. Juan Carlos Ruiz, 53, of Milwaukee was a man with a deep passion for social justice.  As a Latino immigrant from Peru, he was dedicated to the civil rights struggle for immigrants in our state and nationally, and to challenging all forms of social inequality. Juan Carlos has a proud record of organizing to defend Milwaukee’s low income children from lead poisoning, he has left us a rich history of mobilizing the Latino vote, and most recently he marched in the ranks of a Day Without Latinos and Immigrants to defeat state anti-immigrant bills. It was our honor to know him.  He had a passion for life and sadly, it was a life cut too short. It is a loss for both the community he served tirelessly and for his loving family. Yet, his life serves as an inspiration to all of us, to live a meaningful life that goes beyond our individual selves and is in service to the progress of humanity. Our heart-felt condolences go out to his family and we encourage those that have not yet contributed to the gofundme page to please consider doing so. The memorial organized by his family will be this Thursday, March 10, 2016  from 6-11 pm at the Astor hotel, 924 East Juneau Ave., Milwaukee 53202.

En nombre de la mesa directiva de Voces de la Frontera, el personal, y miembros de la organización, es con gran tristeza que escribimos para informarles  que ha fallecido un gran líder en el movimiento de los derechos de inmigrantes. Juan Carlos Ruiz, 53, de Milwaukee era un hombre con una profunda pasión por la justicia social.  Como inmigrante Latino de Perú, fue dedicado a la lucha de los derechos civiles de los inmigrantes en nuestro estado y a nivel nacional y en acabar con todas las formas de desigualdad social.  Juan Carlos tiene una orgullosa historia de organizar para defender a los niños de bajos ingresos de Milwaukee de envenenamiento por plomo, nos ha dejado una rica historia de movilizar el voto Latino, y más recientemente él marchó en las filas de un día sin Latinos e inmigrantes para derrotar propuestas de leyes anti-inmigrantes.  Es nuestro honor haberle conocido.  Él tenía una pasión por la vida, y por desgracia su vida fue demasiado corta. Es una pérdida para la comunidad y para su amorosa familia. Sin embargo, su vida sirve de inspiración para todos nosotros, para vivir una vida significativa que va más allá de nuestro ser individual y está al servicio del progreso de la humanidad.
