There is a proposal being developed by the Madison Police Department to hire 40 new police officers over the next 4 years. This would cost $5 million annually. In cities of relative size there are often 40-60 FEWER cops than Madison has, not including additional police forces such as the capitol police and the UW police.
We demand that these resources be put towards Black economic development, and community mental wellness services rather than police.
Until we have the economic equality, basic needs met, and community control of the police, arrest disparities, incarceration disparities, and killing of unarmed black people are going to continue.
We need to fire Matt Kenny and 39 other officers and use the $10 million that we would save to truly build up resources for Black people and people of color to end racial disparites.
