Myrna De los Santos was my friend. We worked together for years.
Then, last week, she passed away. She was 49.
She struggled with health issues for years – but she simply could not afford the health care she needed on McDonald’s pay.
It’s heartbreaking. And in her honor, we need to make sure it never happens again.
Myrna worked at fast-food restaurants for over a decade. For the past 4 and a half years, she worked at McDonald’s – until low pay and deteriorating health drove her to quit 4 months ago.
Today, we are rallying in 20 state capitals across the nation. We are standing with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II and the Moral Monday movement to say: ENOUGH!
Myrna was from Kansas City, where we are protesting today. McDonald’s failed her with pay too little to afford a doctor – and Missouri’s broken safety net was never there to catch her when she needed it.
We are tired of a system that leaves millions with too little to live. We are tired of unaffordable health care and rent. We are tired of hearing tragic stories like Myrna’s.
Myrna was so full of warmth and joy. She worked harder than anybody – even without a car, without transportation, she would make herself walk to work through snow and rain to pick up a shift.
She was a #FightFor15 leader. I stood with her on the strike line – her passion for a better world was crystal clear.
She’s the reason we fight, the reason we must keep fighting. The reason we are taking the fight to 20 state capitals right now as you read this.
Stand with us. Sign the petition to McDonald’s.
Thank you,
