One year ago Berta Cáceres – renowned Honduran Indigenous and social movement leader – was assassinated. The hydroelectric company DESA, members of the Honduran military (trained by the US), and the Honduran government are implicated in her assassination.
On March 2, 2017 Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) along with 24 other Congress members re-introduced the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act (H.R. 1299). Please ask your representative to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation!
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your representative’s office. Once connected, ask to speak with or leave a message with your representative’s Latin America policy aide.
Script Example:
“My name is _____. I am a constituent from (your city and state). I am calling to ask Representative _____ to co-sponsor H.R. 1299, The Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, calling for suspension of US security aid to Honduras until human rights violations committed by the Honduran security forces cease. The Honduran security forces have been implicated in repression against activists, and even though a US-trained military intelligence official has been charged in Berta’s murder, those who ordered her murder remain free, and environmental and indigenous leaders continue to be threatened, attacked, and criminalized. Can I count on Representative _____ to sign on? Please call me this week at (your phone number) to let me know if Representative _____ will sign.”

A Read-In to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic speech on April 4, 1967 – “Beyond Vietnam” – when he offered his most radical critique of racism, militarism and extreme materialism in the U.S. Dr. King was assassinated exactly one year later (April 4, 1968) on the eve of the launch of the Poor People’s Campaign which would declare poverty a human rights violation.
After the speech is presented, there will be a discussion on its meaning then and for today, including George Martin and Rev. Joseph Ellwanger, longtime activists in the civil rights movement & who worked with Dr. King. This is part of a national movement of popular education by the Movement for Black Lives, United for Peace & Justice, and Veterans for Peace. Local sponsors include: the Martin Luther King Justice Coalition, United Methodist Women, End the Wars Committee of Peace Action – WI, Vets for Peace, National Lawyers Guild, Progressive Moms of Milwaukee and UBLAC (Uplifting Black Liberation and Community).

Last week, after nine years on the job, I joined my 2,500 sisters and brothers of IBEW Local 3 in standing up and striking against Charter/Spectrum Cable over their continued disrespect of workers and the customers we serve. This decision was not made lightly.
For years, my coworkers and I have been targeted for punishment because we advocate for our customers. *Customers who deserve the services they were promised. We take great union pride in the work we do, but Charter/Spectrum is refusing to provide us the tools, resources and support we need to do our jobs properly.
In addition, the company has proposed drastic health care cuts for unionized workers and their families and wants to eliminate our pensions and job security. We decided we simply can no longer stay silent.
We can win. With your help we can show a Multi-Billion dollar company like Charter/Spectrum that labor and the community stand together! Here are three actions you can take now to support the fight:
2). Join a picket line near you at Charter/Spectrum pay centers.
3). Join a mass rally in NYC on Wednesday, April 5 at the company headquarters.
In Solidarity,

Fill the courtroom and the streets!
Mumia is innocent and was framed! 35 in prison is 35 years too long!
On April 24, Mumia Abu-Jamal’s birthday, there will be a court hearing on his PCRA (Post-Conviction Relief Act) petition in Pennsylvania courts. This is an action to overturn all of the PA Supreme Court decisions from 1995-2008 that denied him freedom despite the evidence that the police and prosecution manufactured the “proof” of his guilt and suppressed evidence of his innocence.
This latest legal challenge is based on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Williams case, which ruled that an appellate judge cannot participate in a case in which he formerly had a personal role in a significant prosecutorial decision. Ronald Castille was the District Attorney responsible for opposing Mumia’s 1989 appeal of his trial conviction and death sentence. Then, after being elected to PA Supreme Court in 1994, Castille ruled against Mumia in every appeal brought before him critical of the actions of his former DA’s office. Castille ran for election to the PA Supreme Court bragging that 45 men (including Abu-Jamal) were sentenced to death by his DA’s office and that he was financed by and had been honored by the FOP as “Man of the Year.”
We call for Mumia’s immediate release from prison!
