Police Shooting in Milwaukee- June 11, 2017

Freedom, Inc. condemns the Milwaukee, WI police shooting of two people over a traffic stop on June 11, 2017. Our thoughts are with the family members of those shot and the community impacted by police and other state violence. We renew our call for Community Control over Police as a means of ending police violence.

Milwaukee police shot two people, killing one at this writing, during a traffic stop at Lake Drive and Lincoln Memorial near the North Point Water Tower. Eyewitnesses claim that after shooting ‘multiple times’ into the windshield of a moving car, the police prevented ambulances and paramedics from treating the injured on the scene.

The police shooting comes just as Milwaukee police officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown faces trial for the shooting death of Sylville Smith, killed on August 13, 2016 in the Sherman Park neighborhood of Milwaukee. The shooting led to several nights of urban rebellion.

The tragedy unfolded on a hot Sunday afternoon as people relaxed on the waterfront near the North Point Water Tower. Witnesses say police tried to pull over a car and then shot into the car multiple times as the car attempted to flee.

While in most states in the US, police are prohibited by departmental rules from engaging in car chases in heavily trafficked areas, Milwaukee police shot multiple times into a moving vehicle, apparently over an alleged traffic violation. This type of reckless behavior puts lives at risk and demonstrates that police are more interested in forcing the public to comply with their commands than in ensuring public safety. Whatever the infraction allegedly committed by the driver, it could not have possibly been worth shooting two people inside of a moving car.

Freedom, Inc. asserts that this sort of police behavior is not the work of a few bad apples or a ‘one off’ event, but rather a pattern and practice of multiple police departments across the country.

This type of police action is the best argument for real Community Control over Police, where the job of the police is to protect the community in the way they want to be protected. https://www.facebook.com/AboutFreedomInc/
