The Wisconsin State Legislature has introduced Assembly Bill 206, which puts stringent restrictrions on UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s education of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The bill prevents UW from educating residents on how to conduct abortions and forbids contracting with Planned Parenthood in order for those residents to get experience. This puts the accreditation of their training in so much danger that the state of Wisconsin, already short on OB/GYN’s, may have a much harder time finding qualified candidates to care for us in our hospitals and doctors’ offices.
This bill also puts restrictions on ALL UW Health employees. If passed, those who work for UW Health are forbidden from:
– Performing or assisting in an abortion (on University of Wisconsin property or elsewhere).
– Performing any services at a private entity where abortions are performed, unless it is a hospital.
– Training others, or receiving training, in the performance of abortion care.

There will be a public hearing from 10am to 2pm, and the Student Coalition for Progress will hold a CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES DAY to demonstrate our opposition to this bill all day. Although we originally planned a rally, the Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and several other auxiliary organizations close to the ground on these issues have advised against showing up and rallying for this bill’s opposition. INSTEAD, the best thing we can do to voice our concerns is to make calls to our legislators and ensure that they know of the harm this could do to the university.
