October 4 Milwaukee Prison Letters

Milwaukee, October 8: MSDF Picket

Hosted by Milwaukee IWW

901 N 9th Street, Milwaukee, 11 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

Come contribte to the continuous visible opposition to MSDF. We will be out front of the courthouse, and if we have enough people also the back door and MSDF enterence. Help us spread information to and collect petition signatures from people targeted by and doing business with Milwaukee’s criminal legal system.

If you haven’t signed the petition yet yourself, please do here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/its-time-to-close-milwaukee-secure-detention-facility-msdf

A coaltion of Milwaukee organizations have joined up to shut down MSDF. This facility is a building within a building, where captives have no access to fresh air or sunlight. They are triple bunked in lockdown cells for over 20 hours a day. There is no outdoor rec. The facility was built and is run using funds that should be used for diversionary programs to keep people out of jail, instead it’s being used to keep them on supervision under arbitrary and vindictive probation and parole officers.

We are organizing this protest twice a month. On every 23rd, and one day two weeks before. The National Religious Campaign Against Torture has called for actions on the 23rd of every month (to bring attention to 23 hour a day lockdowns). http://www.nrcat.org/about-us/take-action-current-legislation/563-together-to-end-solitary

Milwaukee, November 11: Armistice Day

Hosted by Iraq Veterans Against the War- Milwaukee

Veterans for Peace Milwaukee Chapter 102
Milwaukee Coalition Against Trump

Armistice Day began as a way to celebrate and promote peace, on Nov. 11, the day World War I ended. Congress responded to a hope among Americans for no more wars by passing a resolution calling for “exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding.” Later, Congress added that Nov. 11 was to be “a day dedicated to the cause of world peace.”

In 1954 Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, and in many cases it has become a celebration of militarism, honoring war rather than remembering the victims or veterans who served. Through this annual event, we want to restore the tradition of Armistice Day as a day to promote world peace.

Milwaukee, October 8: Fundraiser for Cuba after Irma

631 N 19th, Milwaukee, The Coffee House, 7-9 P.M.

Fundraiser for Cuba after Hurricane Irma.
Speakers and Entertainment TBA

Much of Cuba has been devastated by Hurricane Irma, the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in Cuba’s history. Thousands of homes, agriculture, electrical plants, the infrastructure, have been seriously damaged. The Cuban people, government, and mass organizations are working hard in the recovery efforts. Even more damaging than natural disaster is the U.S. economic blockade, which has cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars and hampers its development. Cuba is renowned for extending international solidarity to people around the world with medical workers and teachers; even as Hurricane Irma hit Cuba, Cuba was sending 750 medical personnel to other islands in the Caribbean which had been devastated by the hurricane.
Event Update:…..
Entertainers will include guitarist & vocalist Darele Bisquera, and Troubadour Tony Baez performing songs of love and struggle from the Hispanic world, plus New Orleans jazz and a special music performance from Havana!”

It is our turn to come to Cuba’s aid!

Be thinking about what do we need as Black Queens to do the work we are identifying. We can’t work on others if we haven’t taken time to first identify what we need to be well enough to carry the load and burden of building people for what we want, Black Empowerment, Unity all based in love for our people and our city.

See you after the march!
