Staff and students kicked off the 2019 Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. The Black Lives Matter at School movement asks educators to mobilize for racial justice in education and address the continuing inequities that lead to institutionally racist policies and practices in schools.
The demands of the movement are:
• Ending zero-tolerance discipline policies, which disproportionately penalize black students;
• Mandating that black history and ethnic studies be taught in schools;
• Hiring more black teachers; and placing more counselors in schools.
