In Defense of Black Life: Cambodian Community Conv

Hosted by Southeast Asian Freedom Network – SEAFN

Dear Cambodians,

Now is the time for us to show up as survivors and to defend Black lives. We cannot remain neutral as Black people face genocide in this country. We must roll up our sleeves, hit the streets, and do our part until Black Lives Matter.

Cambodians, we know what it means for our lives to be taken by armed agents of the state while no one pays attention, here and in our homeland. We know what it means to be forced to find peace with our trauma and to find justice on our own without solidarity from the outside world. We know it’s difficult to live with the contradictions of our experiences in this moment. We must challenge ourselves to defend Black lives.

Southeast Asian Freedom Network invites you to join us for a panel and conversation about what it means to be Cambodian in this moment.

Join Our Conversation this Saturday, June 6th at 4pm PST, 5pm MST, 6pm CST, 7pm EST. Tune in at that time to catch the Facebook Live which will be streamed on SEAFN’s FB page.

This event is in support of The Movement for Black Lives‘s week of action. Sign the pledge today at www.defendingblacklives.org

Madison, June 6, 2020: “Been Hard To Breathe” March For Maternal Justice

“Been Hard To Breathe” March For Maternal Justice

In Dane county black newborns have a 9.3 mortality rate while white babies have a 3.7 rate. Black mothers and pregnant people have a 5 times higher chance of dying in labor. Implicit Bias, racism and obstetric violence goes unchecked within the healthcare system and we can not forget about this in our fight for equity. We are calling for attention to be made to the lack of informed consent in hospitals. We are calling for accountability and action being taken when pregnant patients express the feeling of being neglected or ignored. We are asking and demanding equitable pay for our black and brown birth workers.
To fight this racism, it must first be acknowledged, recognized and explicitly named.
Say his name
Say her name
Say the names of all those lost to racism behind the hospital’s doors.

March with us from the Capital at noon, June 6th, where we will call to defund the police. 1 set of riot gear is the monetary equivalent to 50 sets of PPE.
From there we will walk to Meriter and St. Mary’s where personal stories, experiences and creative writing will be shared. Our voices will be heard
Please wear PPE. Snacks and water will be available
From birth, black babies fight for their chance to live. For us it’s BEEN HARD TO BREATHE.

March on Milwaukee: 200 Nights of Freedom

While many Milwaukeeans have a vague notion of the Open Housing Marches, this presentation will offer a detailed examination of events that took place over 200 days in 1967-1968. This quintessential local story will explore the remarkable work of Milwaukee’s NAACP Youth Council and Commandos, with their advisor Father James Groppi, in support of Alderwoman Vel Phillips.

We will begin by building a framework for understanding the civil rights movement and Long Black Freedom Struggle. Then, we will explore the conditions that led to the Open Housing Marches and use images and media to build the dramatic account of what unfolded in Milwaukee’s streets during the marches.

Particularly in this moment — one where our city and country’s streets are again filled with protest — there is no better time to contextualize local civil rights history alongside national narratives in an effort to highlight the role and impact of local leadership and youth activism.

“March on Milwaukee: 200 Nights of Freedom” will be hosted by Dr. Robert S. Smith and Adam Carr. Dr. Robert S. Smith is the Harry G. John Professor of History and the Director of the Center for Urban Research, Teaching & Outreach at Marquette University. Adam Carr is the Deputy Editor for Community Engagement at Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.

Justice for Breonna Taylor Fund

https://bit.ly/3gY1FD0

The community has been reaching out in support of Bree’s family and wanting to donate to the cause. First off, we are SO THANKFUL for EVERYONE standing up for justice and saying her name! We’re not stopping until we truly get justice! All of you are such a blessing! It’s amazing!

Second of all, we are thankful for the offers for donations. My sister and niece are too proud to say it, but this is a tough fight and it does take a toll. They’re both hard workers and they’re missing out on some work (and sleep!) in this fight for justice.

We do not expect anyone to donate to this cause; your voices are being heard and that alone is so powerful! But because of all the calls and the overwhelming generosity, I have set up this account for them.

You all are a blessing. Thank you so much again for everything! And let’s keep this fight for justice going!
