About the Wisconsin Juneteenth Weekend Project:
Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th and commemorates the liberation of the last slaves in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had abolished slavery in the Confederate States in 1863. Though celebrated around the U.S. for many years, it finally obtained federal holiday status in 2021. A few Wisconsin communities have observed the holiday for years and have hosted a wide variety of celebrations, including parties, parades, picnics, and festivals.
The Wisconsin Poor People’s Campaign, a number of local Wisconsin Juneteenth organizers, and other Building Unity Partners are launching the Wisconsin Juneteenth Weekend Project.
What we are doing:
In solidarity with all who seek and celebrate our movement to elimination of systemic racism and resulting disparities, we are encouraging all Wisconsinites to do one or both of these things:
- Go to Washington, DC for the June 18th Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March on Washington and to the Polls. You can also help to spread the word and try to send representatives from your community to join this nationwide action calling for a moral movement.
- Help promote and support Juneteenth celebrations all over Wisconsin, whenever and wherever they are happening.
To register your Juneteenth Celebration and/or Poor People’s Campaign March Send-off events, please go here: https://tinyurl.com/JuneteenthEventsReg.
We will publish and promote all of these events in a directory of such activities around Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Juneteenth Weekend Project is seeking the endorsement and active volunteer support from justice groups, congregations, communities, and individuals who are committed to making Juneteenth 2022 a holiday that Wisconsin will never forget. We invite you to join us and sign on as an official cosponsor by going here: https://tinyurl.com/WIJuneteenthCosponsorSignUp
