By Concerned Fond du Lac Community Members
Fond du Lac County Board Chairman Sam Kaufman needs to prove that he will be a good steward to our communities, including women, girls, and our transgender siblings. We demand that he either introduce or support a County-level non-enforcement resolution to Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban. Doing so would make enforcing abortion restrictions the lowest possible priority for Fond du Lac County.
Kaufmann is not only the County Board Chairman, but he was also recently elected as County Executive. In both roles, his main obligation is to help grow our County into a desirable educational, commercial, environmental, and recreational destination and chosen home place, not to uphold the backward, regressive reputation that continues to drive people and businesses away.
Kaufman now has the chance to set aside his history of false neutrality and his odd tendency as an elected official to avoid “political” topics by using the power of his dual offices to help secure the full and complete human rights of all County residents. Anything less will be unfair, unsafe, and completely unacceptable.
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney has said he would enforce Wisconsin’s felony abortion ban statute if Roe v. Wade was overturned. He claims that “it is up to the legislature to make the laws and for district attorney’s to enforce the rule of law, not pick and choose when to do so.” Toney’s statement overlooks his Party’s refusal to even participate in a special legislative session to review Wisconsin’s abortion law, as well as his own decision not to prosecute those who violated Governor Ever’s Safer at Home order during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office will continue our mission of enforcing the rule of law.” Considering Toney’s past comments it is clear that his office desperately needs to be defunded now more than ever. It is clear that he will make felon’s of any person in Fond du Lac County who chooses to make their own decisions for their own body.
The Fond du Lac County Board of Commissioners is meant to be a non-partisan, secular body. A non-enforcement resolution from the County Board would demonstrate that reproductive justice and bodily autonomy is more important than scoring partisan political points to help Toney’s Attorney General campaign.
Sam Kaufman and the County Board of Commissioners has the ability to show they understand that church and state are separate, and that the Party of Small Government was never meant to fit inside a uterus.
Pictured above is Sam Kaufman, Fond du Lac County Executive. Kaufman was also appointed as County Board Chairman earlier in the year.
In Winnebago County just north of Fond du Lac County we see true solidarity to the county residents who are hurting to say the absolute least. Winnebago County Supervisor Brian Defferding announced on July 2nd that he will be introducing a resolution of non-enforcement of Wisconsin’s old abortion ban in Winnebago County. Brian Defferding announced “With the recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe V. Wade, it is very clear Wisconsin’s state laws regarding abortion are very old and needs updating. Wisconsin’s 1849 law outlawing abortion passed 14 years before the Emancipation Proclamation and 71 years before women gained the right to vote. Despite some amendments since this old law, it remains on the books, leading to confusion. To ensure and re-affirm our residents of their medical privacy during this time, I find it important for Winnebago County to pass this resolution I’m introducing, which states that county funds and/or resources will not be actively used to enforce these old laws.”
Defund Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney
You can contact Sam Kaufman and demand that he stand up for a woman’s right to choose what is right for their own bodies and their own life. Please demand that he defunds Eric Toney from prosecuting and enforcing a law that was put into place before women even had the right to vote.
