Milwaukee, August 6, 2023: Annual commemoration of the horrific U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 6 PM to 9 PM

      Lincoln Park Picnic Areas 3 and 4

Just north of Hampton Ave, and northwest of Lincoln Park Pavilion on Milwaukee River Parkway (bring chairs)

6 PM –  Japanese Lantern-making, folding origami peace cranes, story-telling of “Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes.”

7 PM –  Music by Frogwater, with John and Susan Nicholson playing traditional Celtic music, Delta blues and original material.

7:30 PM –  Commemorative Program

  • A moment of silence for Daniel Ellsberg, whistleblower, anti-nuclear activist. By Julie Enslow and Pam Richard.
  • Kevin Martin, national Peace Action, on efforts through our united Peace Action Affiliates to abolish nuclear weapons and war.
  • Reflections on the Atomic Bombings– Sara Onitsuka,  Milwaukee Antiwar Committee, a 3rd/4th generation Japanese American will speak about their experience visiting the atomic bomb remembrance sites in Hiroshima as a child.
  • Music by Glenn Asch (of the Milwaukee Symphony) and Laurie Asch.
  • The Story of The Golden Rule, Mark Foreman, Milwaukee Veterans for Peace. The peace sailboat that helped bring about an end to atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. It will be in Milwaukee Sept. 1 to Sept. 4. 

8:15 PM -Floating of Traditional Japanese Lanterns on the Milwaukee River
