Kenosha Education Association, September 19, 2023: Join Public School Champions!

Kenosha Education Association

Let us know you will be joining public school champions at the Kenosha Annual Meeting of Electors on Tuesday, September 19!
________
School districts receive a partial reimbursement in order to support special education needs our students have. Support for instruction, transportation, and other programs are made possible by this state aid.
The special education reimbursement rate also plays a significant role in school districts’ annual operating budgets. As student behaviors and needs have increased over the years, the need for additional aid has also increased. Despite its importance, elected officials in Wisconsin passed a meager 3.33% increase in special education, resulting in a $1.25 million increase for KUSD. By contrast, private voucher schools received a 90% special education reimbursement rate, 56.7% more than public schools.
Ultimately, the budget proposed at the annual meeting continues to be an inadequate amount to ensure students are receiving an equitable, high-quality public school education. This is why it is imperative Kenosha community members attend and vote in the annual meeting in order to maximize the funding allowed by the state.

Some debate whether funding makes a difference in student achievement, but according to the American University School of Education, numerous studies have found that the benefits of increased funding can include improved test scores, higher graduation rates, and increased earnings for students in adulthood.

Another important study projected that by increasing per-pupil spending by 22 percent during low-income students’ years in school, states could completely eliminate the achievement gap between children from affluent and economically disadvantaged homes.
