Union, Lawmakers Seek Legislation That Would Set Staffing Requirements for Health Care

Safe staffing ratios? Banning mandatory overtime? That could be the law of the land in Wisconsin, and we’re leading the way. On September 13, 2023, our union, the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, Local 5000, AFT, AFL-CIO, along with Senators Larson and Carpenter, and Representatives Shelton, Ratcliff, and Hong, introduced the Nurse Staffing and Patient Protection Act–a bill that will create enforceable nurse-to-patient ratios and safe staffing plans for all direct care healthcare workers in hospitals in Wisconsin. The bill also would make mandatory overtime illegal.

YOUR VOICE IS CRUCIAL–In order to keep this bill moving through our legislature, your state senator and assembly representative need to hear from you. Click here to tell your legislators to support this bill for safe staffing in Wisconsin. It will only take a minute! Then, ask your friends, family members, and coworkers to contact their state legislators.

The facts are simple: Healthcare is on fire because hospital corporations have made us do more with less for years. As a direct result, workloads are unsustainable and patient care isn’t as great as it could be. Evidence demonstrates that safe staffing saves lives, and now it very well might save our entire healthcare system from total collapse.

We know the hospital association is going to fight this bill so that they can preserve their way of doing things. After all, healthcare is much more comfortable for those in a board room rather than a patient room. But, together, we can win real change to improve patient care, our careers, and our lives.

So, don’t wait. Write your legislators TODAY!
