LCLAA Bi-Annual Conference 2023
Saturday, November 11th, from 9 am- 3 pm

As a constituency group of the AFL-CIO since its creation in 1972, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) represents the interests of more than 2 million workers. LCLAA members and leaders use unionization as a vehicle to secure rights and job protections as they fight for social, economic, and labor justice.

The mission of LCLAA is to organize and mobilize Latinos in the labor movement in an effort to impact workers’ rights and their influence in the political process. Historically LCLAA has been an important voice in the workplace and a resource for members in the Milwaukee area.

The Organizing Committee for our Milwaukee Area LCLAA organization has completed the process to start a new chapter.  We are ready to move forward on the work of the former chapter that was chartered in 1998 as well as new programming. We are happy to announce that the chapter is hosting the biannual conference and we will be featuring excellent speakers from UW- School for Workers, Voces De la Frontera, and the AFL-CIO’s immigration specialist.

Ivan Herrada, a Field Rep with the Heat and Frost Insulators Local 19 emphasized the importance of our work, “When I look back at my family’s journey as immigrants in the US I realize how little to no knowledge we had of the support a union provides workers and their families regardless of their legal status. Today, I form part of the organizing committee for both LCLAA and Local 19 to provide that knowledge and support to my community, to the workforce, and to our union members. It is important to me to take action and empower our community.”

This year LCLAA will be hosting its Bi-Annual Conference at the Ironworkers Hall. This conference will be held on Saturday, November 11th, from 9 am-3 pm. To support the work being done by Latinx union members in the labor movement and in the community, we are asking local unions to commit to attending the conference of LCLAA Milwaukee.

Please contact  Lo at the Labor Council if you have someone from your Local who is interested in getting involved. We need your participation on many levels to work towards greater workplace protections, and social, economic, and labor justice for workers in the Milwaukee area. Thank you for your consideration and continued support.

Fraternally,

Pam Fendt, President

Milwaukee Area Labor Council AFL-CIO

The U.S. and Israel Slaughter One Child Every 10 Minutes!

The Palestinian child death toll in Gaza has climbed to 3,457, or more than 40% of the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 7.

This amounts to Israeli forces killing one Palestinian child every ten minutes for the last three weeks.

The total death toll is surpassing the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, when the Bosnian Serb military killed around 8,000 Muslim men and teenagers. It is long past time for the international community to demand a ceasefire and protect Palestinians in Gaza.

Read and share DCIP’s latest update on Palestinian children in Gaza »

International leaders are repeatedly calling for Israeli forces to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians, but these words ring hollow as Israeli forces and authorities make clear their intentions to commit genocide against the Palestinian people. More than 1,050 Palestinian children are reported missing under the rubble of entire city blocks that Israeli forces are flattening in an indiscriminate bombing campaign designed to eliminate Palestinian families.

Thank you for your continued support of Palestinian human rights and please continue calling your elected officials to demand a ceasefire and protection of Palestinian children.

In solidarity,
Defense for Children International – Palestine

NYC, October 31, 2023: Stop the Blockade! Let the Aid In to Gaza NOW!

PRESS RELEASE:
RALLY DEMANDING IMMEDIATE AND UNCONDITIONAL OPENING OF EGYPTS RAFAH GATE: 100’s of DAILY TRUCKS MUST BE ALLOWED TO PASS

What: Rally Demanding Immediate Opening of Egypt’s Rafah Gate
Where: Egytian Mission, E 44th St & 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10017
When: Tuesday, October 21, 2023 at 4pm
Who: Al-Awda NY: The Palestine Right to Return Coalition and Palestinian Assembly for Liberation

Gaza typically receives at least 500 trucks loaded with food, fuel, and medical supplies daily. Since October 8th, however, less than 100 trucks in total have been granted entry through Egypt’s Rafah border gate due to the siege imposed by Israel. This number represents a fraction of the supplies needed by Palestinians in Gaza who are being bombarded relentlessly by the Zionist entity.  The Zionist entity’s blockade of critical and life-giving humanitarian aid is only one facet of its genocidal warfare on Gaza.

With a population of over 2.2 million people, of which half are children, the blockade constitutes an international war crime in and of its own. No trucks have been allowed through the northern gate, controlled by the Zionist entity, since October 8th. In continuing to bow to the directives of the explicitly genocidal Netanyahu government, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is complicit in this war crime. Hundreds of trucks loaded with aid have amassed at the Rafah Gate, yet Sisi continues to obey the Zionist regime’s orders and keeps the flow to breadcrumbs. As the indiscriminate airstrikes reach their third week, hospitals are attempting to function beyond their capacity. The lack of fuel and medical supplies as well as destroyed infrastructure condemn many Palestinians to death. Those who have survived bombings face operations without anesthesia. The targeted bombing of bakeries and depleting food storage are exacerbating the already dire conditions. The Zionist siege on Gaza is systematically choking the life out of Palestinians.  We demand that Sisi open the Rafah Gate immediately and without restrictions. We demand that medical supplies, water, and fuel be included in the aid trucks, as fuel is needed for every aspect of life, from incubators and dialysis machines in the hospitals, to the bakeries which continue to serve the people. We demand that Sisi respects the lives of P alestinians in Gaza, ends his complicity with the Zionist regime, and opens the Rafah border gates.

300+ Striking Casino Workers Head to Michigan State Capitol for Support
After launching a citywide casino strike Oct. 17, Detroit’s casino workers call on state leaders to support their fight and all working people in Michigan

What: Striking casino workers will be talking to members of Michigan’s state legislature about the strike and other important legislation impacting all working people in Michigan.

When: Tuesday, October 31. Buses will depart from Detroit at 8:00am. Lobbying will take place at the Michigan State Capitol between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

Who: 300+ striking Detroit casino workers—dealers, cleaning staff, food and beverage workers, valets, engineers and more—who are members of the five unions that comprise the Detroit Casino Council (DCC): UNITE HERE Local 24, United Auto Workers Local 7777, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.

Where: Buses leave for Lansing from UNITE HERE Union Hall (300 River Place Dr., Detroit). Lobbying at Michigan State Capitol, 100 N. Capitol Ave, Lansing.

Visuals: Hundreds of striking workers wearing blue union shirts and caps.

Interviews: Members of the DCC worker negotiating committee and union officials are available for interviews. Please contact to coordinate.

Why:
Detroit casino strikers are headed to Lansing to speak to Michigan leaders about their fight for a fair contract and important legislation impacting all working people in Michigan.

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, unionized casino workers at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown launched a wall-to-wall strike affecting 3700 casino workers across a broad range of classifications such as dealers, cleaning staff, food and beverage workers, valets, engineers and more. Workers are on strike to protect their healthcare and win decent raises, fair workloads, and more job security. This is the first casino strike in Detroit history.

Detroit’s casino workers sacrificed raises and shouldered heavier workloads so the industry could recover from the pandemic. In September 2020, workers agreed to a three-year contract extension with minimal wage increases to help the industry get back on its feet. Since then, Detroit casino workers have received only 3% raises, but inflation in Detroit has risen 20%. In contrast, industry gaming revenues have now surpassed pre-pandemic levels to reach a new record high. In 2022, the Detroit casino industry generated $2.27 billion in gaming revenue and is on track for another record-breaking year in 2023.

Just last week, workers won the backing of Detroit city leaders after the Detroit City Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of the strike.

###

The Detroit Casino Council (DCC) is UNITE HERE Local 24, the UAW, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters. These five unions represent most of the workers at the three casinos in Detroit: Hollywood Casino at Greektown, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino. Our members work in food and beverage, housekeeping, retail outlets, slots and table games, engineering and more. The DCC partner unions are part of International Unions that have experience representing gaming workers and winning great contracts throughout the United States, including in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
