We are writing as the potential for massive escalation exists in the Middle East as the Netanyahu government prepares a ground assault on Gaza in response to Hamas’s heinous attacks on Israeli civilians and military personnel. The Biden administration has told our diplomats not to urge Israeli restraint.
It is critical that trade unions in the United States speak up to urge an immediate ceasefire to protect the lives of both Palestinians and Israelis. We also want to prevent the kinds of hostility and discrimination that followed 9/11 in the U.S., affecting so many of our members.
The National Writers Union is convening a Zoom call, War Is Union Business, on Monday, October 16, at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT for trade unionists, sponsored by UFCW Local 3000 and General President Carl Rosen for the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), including United Auto Workers Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla, to discuss how those of us grounded in working-class organization can meaningfully respond to this crisis.
