Emma speaks with Jeff Schuhrke, assistant professor in labor studies at SUNY Empire State University, to discuss his recent piece at In These Times entitled ““This Fight Is Global”: Workers Around the World Are Standing With Striking U.S. Autoworkers.”
Professor Jeff Schuhrke then dives right into the massive size of this labor movement, with the US recently seeing hundreds of thousands of laborers on strike in recent weeks, driven in large part by the United Auto Workers’ rolling strikes against the big three auto-makers. Expanding on this latter point, Professor Schuhrke explores the international solidarity being shown to the UAW amid threats to export their jobs abroad for cheaper labor, with both independent Mexican unions and Lula da Silva’s Brazilian government extending support, before he and Emma wrap up with an assessment of the incredible international labor moment, and the future of international labor solidarity.
