| On Nov. 20th, at 6pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa, the Tampa 5 will give a report from the tour, their case, and discuss preparations to organize around their trial and to defend students’ freedom of speech in the era of DeSantis. |
| As the tour winds down, the Tampa 5 – Gia Davila, Jeanie Kida, Laura Rodriguez, Lauren Pineiro, and Chrisley Carpio – have begun preparations for their December trial. On their tour, they have garnered support and endorsements from labor union leaders, student organizations, faculty, and even city council members and elected officials from the West Coast to the East Coast. They are eager to finish the battle to defend the right to free speech, to protest, and to an education free from racist whitewashing, and they are eager to win. On November 20th, the Committee to Defend the Tampa 5 calls on all of its member groups and its supporters to meet, hear the Tampa 5 give a report, and to collectively begin preparations for protests the remaining upcoming court dates: a pre-trial hearing on December 5th, and the start of their trial proceedings on December 12th. Their commitments to defend the right to protest DeSantis and to defend the student movement have not changed. As such, neither has the Committee’s determination to defend the Tampa 5, to keep anti-DeSantis protesters out of jail, and to call on SA Susan Lopez to drop the charges. As the Florida governor ramps up his attacks on protesters of all stripes, the people of Florida have both an ability to and a responsibility to defend our First Amendment rights. Now is the time to organize, to stand our ground against the many attacks of Ron DeSantis on our education and civil liberties, and to keep protesters – students, workers, and community members – out of prison. |
