The republican national convention is coming to town, and with it comes the circus of bigots, vigilantes, trolls, and zealots. Law enforcement agents from across the country will pour into our city by the thousands during the week of July 15th, many of whom have no personal connections to our community. The chief of the Milwaukee police department was granted permission to suspend standard operating procedure (SOP) 575, which requires body cam footage to be released to the public within 15 days of a critical incident, such as acts of violence taken towards non-violent protesters. Additionally, the verdict out of Kenosha in 2021 has undoubtedly emboldened right-wing militias and armed extremists to enter our city in droves. It is clear that the right is prepared for, if not eagerly awaiting, the opportunity to incite violence in our humble little working class city.
While we need people in the streets, courageously willing to take personal risk and make their voices heard, we also recognize the need to seize this unique opportunity and dream up something bigger. We want to do something different for those in our community who cannot risk arrest due to being previously incarcerated, for those whose bodies cannot physically participate in a march, for those without access to childcare who require family friendly political engagement, and also for those of us who will need a space to rest, connect, and recharge after a day of marching and putting our bodies on the line.
In the spirit of radical hope, love, and care for one another, our community, and our city, the justice team at ZAO MKE is proposing that the organizing community work together to gather as many individuals, organizations, and local businesses as possible who are interested in helping us throw the biggest block party this city has ever seen. We want to facilitate joyous, fun-filled events in every corner of the city throughout the entire week the RNC is here!
