Dear friends of El Salvador,
We need your help to make a call to your Congressional representative to ask them to sign on to an important letter to the State Department expressing concerns about human rights violations, political persecution, and attacks on democracy in El Salvador.
We only have until MONDAY to get reps to sign on so if yours hasn’t yet signed on (see below), could you make a call now?
Current signers: Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Chuy García (D-IL), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ)
How to call: 1) Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Rep. 2) If someone answers, ask to leave a message for the person who handles foreign affairs. (If you get the voicemail, you can leave the same message!) Here’s a sample message – feel free to personalize: Hello, my name is ___________ and I am calling from [___YOUR TOWN/CITY___]. I am calling to encourage you to sign on to a letter in support of democracy and human rights in El Salvador. The current president is trying to remain in office in violation of the Constitution. Meanwhile, constitutional rights have been suspended for nearly two years, and over 75,000 people have been arrested, including union leaders, journalists and environmental defenders. How can there be free and fair elections in this context? Congress should speak out and to encourage the State Department to do the same. Please look for the letter from Representative Omar’s office and sign on by Monday, January 29. Thank you. 3) After your call, just reply to this email to let us know how it went!
If you’d like to send an email to your rep instead, please use our online action alert here.
Thank you for your solidarity! Alexis Stoumbelis, Executive Director
