Founded in 1999 with a vision of combating the failing global health infrastructure and training doctors from around the world to return home to work in their own underserved communities, The Latin American School of Medicine has officially been awarded with international accreditation by the Council of Evaluation and International Accreditation of the Association of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (UDUAL).

In a short 24 years, ELAM has trained over 30,000 doctors worldwide and 228 for the U.S. alone. They have been part of of larger history of Cuban medical internationalism, where countless brigades led by Cuban revolutionary doctors defend global health on the front lines in times of natural disasters and disease outbreak.

The Cuban Ministry of Health provides scholarships for students from over 120 countries to study at ELAM, especially those in dire need of health professionals. At IFCO/Pastors for Peace we are honored with the responsibility to facilitate the scholarship offered by Cuba to students here in the U.S. who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend medical school. Hear below from our ELAM Scholarship Coordinator, Dr. Samira Addrey on the impact and importance of the ELAM scholarship just not for her own medical journey but for the fight for global health justice.
