Unionized journalists at the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle are on strike over unfair labor practices after Gannett failed to come to an agreement on a new contract by midnight on Friday. The news means that two Gannett newsrooms in the path of the solar eclipse will be on strike when the eclipse hits Monday, after journalists at the Austin American-Statesman launched a strike on Friday.
Journalists in both newsrooms are represented by the NewsGuild-CWA, which collectively represents more than 50 Gannett bargaining units covering more than 1,000 employees across the country.
Rochester Democrat & Chronicle journalists officially launched their strike at 12:00am today after contract negotiations with Gannett management broke down. The journalists are protesting unfair labor practices by Gannett and demanding a living wage and basic protections on the job, including protections from the misuse of AI.
