Madison schools are facing a nearly $12.5 million deficit next year, as the district grapples with issues like inflation and the expiration of pandemic relief money.
“This is a system that’s been intentionally targeted for decades to be underfunded, underutilized, disrespected, and mismanaged,” says Jones. “That is on all of us – so we all need to be more vigilant and demand more of the legislature and the governor’s office and other spaces.”
MMSD is expected to have a final budget draft in June.

Madison Teachers Incorporated
Power to the People

All of Madison’s students deserve:
• Fully staffed schools with more allocations,
• Smaller class sizes for better learning environments,
• More student services staff to meet their mental health needs.
Students are at the center of everything we do. Together as a community and labor union, we’re pushing for the Schools Our Students Deserve.
