Join us on Sunday, July 28th, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Houdini Plaza in Appleton, WI for a Vigil and Memorial for Sonya Massey, brutally murdered by a Sangamon County deputy after calling for help. Like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson, Massey was a Black woman tragically killed by police in her own home. Massey complied with all the officers’ orders, but Deputy Sean Grayson still shot her multiple times while she was on the ground, unarmed and defenseless. Grayson, now charged with murder, has a troubling history that highlights the systemic negligence within our policing system.
The released video shows yet another defenseless Black woman viewed as a threat by armed police. Between 2019 and 2021, around 180 calls for help ended in law enforcement shooting and killing the very people in need, many in a mental health crisis. This vigil stands in solidarity with Sonya’s family and the countless others affected by police violence.
