Event by Moratorium NOW! Coalition

Join our weekly grassroots organizing meeting for Mon. Aug. 19, 2024, beginning at 7:00pm.

The meeting is our third planning and evaluation session for this month.

There are numerous issues that have surfaced over the last week which will be addressed tonight.

Last week we held a seminar on the current situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela where the United States government is attempting once again to stage a coup against the recently reelected President Nicolas Maduro. We hosted Jesus Rodriguez Espinoza, the publisher of Orinoco Tribune based in Caracas.

We will continue our planning for the annual Labor Day Parade taking place just two weeks from today on Sept. 3. Our focus will be on solidarity with Palestine and the role of organized labor.

Last month we held three actions: a demonstration at the federal bldg. against the visit of the Israeli prime minister to Washington, D.C.; a press conference in conjunction with the Detroit Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability (DCPTA); a demonstration at the MFCU to defend the home of a widow in the city being evicted by this financial institution; and a coalition meeting on the “Move the Money Resolution.”

Two weeks ago, we held a hybrid meeting on the historical background to the Palestinian question. We will evaluate this event at tonight’s meeting.

We will also provide an update on our efforts to save the home of a widow in Detroit. We have been holding informational pickets for several weeks in various locations in the city and suburbs.

We will give an update on the Wayne State University encampment and its destruction by police. Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP) has been formed. The grouping held another public meeting on Tues. June 11 at the UU Church in Midtown. There was a panel discussion at the WSU Law School on Saturday as well. Updates on these events and others will be reviewed at tonight’s meeting.

We held an event in honor of Juneteenth on Tues. June 18. 7:00-9:00pm at the St. Matthews-St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church located at 8850 Woodward between Holbrook and King. We commemorated the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer during 1964. More details on this event will be forthcoming tonight.

We participated in May Day last month ago in Clark Park.

We sent a delegation to a labor conference in Chicago over the weekend to do outreach on our anti-fascism initiative and on Palestine solidarity.

The Niger government in West Africa has ordered the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) to exit the country along with the French.

We attended a Social Workers for Palestine demonstration held in downtown Detroit on Fri. April 12.

March 30 was Palestine Land Day where demonstrations were held in the Detroit area and around the world. The Palestinian question has become a key issue in this United States election year.

On Feb. 25, we participated in a rally held at the Dearborn Manor in solidarity with Palestine and in opposition to the genocide in Gaza. Speakers included the Mayor of Dearborn, Cong. Rashida Tlaib, former State Senator Nina Turner from Ohio, Rev. Robert Smith, Maureen Taylor of MWRO, etc. We will review this event at tonight’s meeting.

On Sat. Feb. 17 from 3:00-6:00pm, Moratorium NOW! Coalition had a literature table and a speaker at the Red Books Festival being held at the Swords into Plowshares Gallery on East Adams and Woodward downtown.

The South African government has been hailed for the ruling handed down by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague in the Netherlands against the State of Israel for its genocidal policies in Palestine. We will have details on this historic ruling.
