INA Nurses at UI Health have called for a strike! On August 19th, the 1,750 INA RNs and LPNs at University of Illinois Hospital – UI Health and at outpatient clinics throughout Chicago will walk out on a 7-day ULP strike. They voted 98% in favor (1349-29) to strike.

UI Health is one of Chicago’s most essential safety net hospitals. Its nurses have sacrificed their health and their family time to save lives, prevent COVID spread and treat Chicago’s most vulnerable patient community over the past few years. Over that same time they have experienced under staffing, workplace violence and a loss in purchasing power thanks to the record inflation of the past few years.

Since beginning negotiations earlier this year, the bargaining team representing the INA RNs have been meeting with UIH leadership hoping to settle their contract before its August 19th expiration. The nurses have been very clear that their priorities are safety for nurses and patients, staffing ratios that allow for high quality care conditions and wages that compete with nearby hospitals. All of these proposals have been rejected or completely ignored. Instead, UIH leadership have put forward their own proposal package that gives charge nurse decision making power to an automated machine, combines current tracks into larger and less specialized pools, and removes the guarantee that the union would be maintained should the hospital be sold.
