From Our Hearts to Cuba/Saving Lives Campaign
Since the beginning of May the Cuba solidarity movement in the US, working with Medi-Cuba Europa in 9 European countries, has raised more than $300,000 to enable the purchase of life saving heart makers for the Cuban people. 330 have already been purchased and it is anticipated that ultimately more than 500 will have been sent to Cuba. The funds have come from individuals, organizations and labor unions including $10,000 from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU)
The US campaign has been led by the Saving Lives Campaign https://savinglives.us-cubanormalization.org/ – a project of the National Network on Cuba and strongly backed by the US-Cuba Normalization Coalition. This is the third time in recent years that the Saving Lives Campaign has been highly successful in sending crucially needed medical supplies to Cuba. The first was in 2021 when 6 million syringes were sent for Cuba’s COVID vaccination program, and then in 2022 to purchase a number of anesthesia machines.
Fundraising has run in parallel with advocacy work to get President Biden to remove Cuba from the US State Department’s State Sponsors of Terrorism List (SSOT) – a truly unjustified and arbitrary designation that makes it almost impossible for Cuba to itself purchase the pacemakers, and countless other items, because banks won’t accept payments from “terrorists”.
As we enter the full election season in the US, the US part of the fundraising campaign is winding up and all energies will become focused on persuading Biden or Harris to remove Cuba from the SSOT list.
