For Immediate Release: Protest Today, 8/28/24, 4pm at Turkish Mission, Demanding Release of Freedom Flotilla Ship to Gaza.  We demand Turkey let the ship sail and stop obstructing independent civil society efforts to break the siege on Gaza!

When: Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 4 pm EST

Where: Turkish Mission, 821 First Avenue, New York, NY 10017

Who: PAL-Awda NY/NJ

New York, NY – Today, August 28, 2024 at 4pm, PAL-Awda NY/NJ will protest at the Turkish Mission, demanding that Türkiye let the Freedom Flotilla ship, “Conscience”, set sail immediately from its Turkish port to break the siege of Gaza. This is part of our international call-in campaign to Turkish embassies, demanding that the Turkish government, particularly the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, allow the ship “Conscience” to set sail immediately from its Turkish port to break the siege of Gaza. The Turkish government is currently blocking the “Conscience” from departing, a clear violation of its own laws and international obligations. This ship, carrying thousands of pounds of life  saving aid, is being held by Turkey despite being fully inspected & flagged. We will express concern for this grave injustice today at the Turkish Mission.

Legal Compliance by the Ship, Violations by Turkish Authorities:

The ship “Conscience” and its owners have fully complied with all legal obligations under Turkish and international law. There is no lawful reason to prevent its departure. The Turkish government’s actions to block the ship violate Turkish law and international law, damaging Türkiye’s commitment to justice and international law. Preventing the ship from sailing undermines the principles of freedom and justice.

While concerns about “israeli” violence exist, the passengers and owners of the ship “Conscience” are not seeking Turkish support, protection, or legal defense. They have received support from other governments, international legal groups, and officials. Moreover, they willingly accept the risks, fully aware of the dangers involved. We urge the Turkish Minister of Transport to let the ship sail!
