Steve Biko, 

the leader of the 

black consciousness 

movement, 

and probably the 

most influential 

young black leader 

in South Africa, 

died while being 

held by 

security forces 

in Port Elizabeth. 

He was the forty-first 

person to die

 while in police custody 

in South Africa.
