From WI Fair Maps:
The use of ballot drop boxes in Wisconsin for the November 2024 election is a hot topic — the subject of litigation, lies implying election fraud and misconduct, and a source of confusion for many voters. In July, the Wisconsin Supreme Court authorized clerks to determine whether to use ballot drop boxes.
On Sunday, September 22, Mayor Doug Diny, who does not support the use of voting drop boxes, donned a hard hat and used a hand cart to remove the locked Official Drop Box from outside City Hall. The city clerk authorized the use of the ballot drop box, which was to be secured and opened for voters’ use beginning Monday, September 23. Mayor Diny, however, removed the drop box without the blessing of the clerk or the Wausau Common Council.
On Wednesday, October 2, Wausau voters, accompanied by voting rights activists from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, All Voting is Local, Souls to the Polls and others, delivered a letter to the United States Attorney’s Office Western District of Wisconsin in Madison asking him to investigate the Mayor’s actions.
Wausau isn’t the only municipality experiencing this kind of shenanigans. On August 1, the Dodge County Sheriff sent an email to clerks in the county raising concerns about the use of ballot drop boxes and amplifying conspiracy theories trafficked by the former president.
Use of ballot drop boxes is up to the municipal clerk for each municipality. To find out whether your municipality will make ballot drop boxes available to voters, it is best to call your local clerk. You can find the most current contact information at www.MyVote.WI.gov.
