A Call to unions, unorganized workers, community organizations, social justice and human rights groups:
Let’s unite now to defend ourselves against Trump’s fascist plans
It is imperative to organize a powerful, independent movement of workers in unions and the unorganized, along with the broadest range of progressive organizations, to defend a century of gains by the working class and oppressed peoples.
Trump and his MAGA followers have made it clear that they intend to roll back civil rights and union rights; women’s, LGBTQ+ and disabled rights, along with climate and environmental protections. They intend to target immigrants. Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid are not safe. They want to purge military officers, the media and government employees who are not loyal to MAGA.
They have openly called for unleashing fascist followers against people they call “vermin” and “unhuman.” Trump promised a “bloodbath.” This is the language of Hitler, the Nazis and the Klan.
We cannot depend on the courts or police to protect our rights. The military will be under the control of the Commander-in-Chief – Trump.
But we are not powerless. All the gains from the past 100 years came from peoples’ movements in the streets and workplaces. Legislation came only after we won the struggles through mass action.
On a local level we can immediately form joint defense committees to protect union and community meetings, progressive rallies, demonstrations and our leaders.
We should begin discussing the idea of a General Strike if it becomes necessary. We can also prepare literature to be given to members of the United States military on the illegal and immoral actions of the Trump administration urging them to disobey illegal orders.
