Chicago Teachers Union (CTU): Time to Plan Your Civic Day of Action on May 1, 2026!

On April 17, CTU and CPS reached a historic agreement to declare May 1 a Civic Day of Action.

We have signed a joint agreement that includes CPS providing buses for field trips of students and educators to attend the 1 p.m. rally in Union Park, pledging no retaliation against students or staff who participate in May Day, participating in lobbying for full funding in Springfield, and committing future May Days that fall in the work week as a teacher-directed professional development day so that we all have clarity for the years to come.

Below are tools to help you and your co-workers make this a historic day for our students and communities. Make sure to fill out this form to let CTU know what you are planning for the day.

  • Read the Memorandum of Understanding between CTU and CPS declaring May Day a day of civic action.
  • Use this checklist if you are planning a field trip with students on May Day. Make sure to update us at organizing@ctulocal1.org with how many students you need transportation for.
  • Use this curriculum guide if you are planning a civic event at your school. This includes resources for elementary school events.
  • Join us for a member webinar on Tuesday April 21 from 5 to 6 p.m. where we will answer any questions about May Day and the upcoming dues vote.

Join one of the three regional meetings this week:

  • Southeast Side Regional Meeting, Monday, April 20.
  • Southwest Side Regional Meeting, Tuesday April 21.
  • Southside Regional Meeting, Thursday April 23.
