Madison’s  Eastside BUG (Potluck for People, Peace, and Planet):       In partnership with Jewish Voice for Peace, and others we’re hosting

a Nakba Potluck and Program

Save the Date and join us to commemorate the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe). Though the murder and displacement of Palestinian citizens started much earlier, on May 14, 1948, with the support of the U.K. which had occupied and controlled Palestine for decades, Israel declared its creation. The next day, May 15th, the Nakba began. Israeli forces killed over 15,000 Palestinians in mass atrocities and forced over 750,000 to leave their homes and land. 78 years later the Nakba continues.

More info coming in next week’s update.

*** Info about Nakba Day from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba_Day

Nakba Day (Arabic: ذكرى النكبة, romanized: Ḏikrā an-Nakba, lit. ’Memory of the Catastrophe’) is the day of commemoration for the Nakba, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe, which comprised the destruction of Palestinian society and homeland in 1948, and the permanent displacement of a majority of the Palestinian people. It is generally commemorated on 15 May, the day after the Gregorian calendardate of the Israeli Declaration of Independence on 14 May 1948. For Palestinians, it is an annual day of commemoration of the displacement that preceded and followed Israel’s establishment.[1]

The day was officially inaugurated by Yasser Arafat in 1998, though the date had been unofficially used for protests since as early as 1949.
