Trump’s Criminal Assault on Venezuela: What does it portend for Venezuela, the Western Hemisphere and the World?
To all appearances, the bombing of Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores by the US marks a dangerous escalation in the imperialist assault on Latin America, and sets a terrifying precedent.
The Trump regime is already threatening action against Cuba, Colombia and Mexico, and is again making noises about colonising Greenland. While China, Russia, Iran, Brazil, South Africa, the DPRK and many other countries have strongly condemned the US action, the United Nations is paralysed by the US’s Security Council veto. Casting off any notion of international law or the established norms of relations between states, the US believes it can act with complete impunity. At this webinar, some of the keenest observers of the war the US has long waged against Venezuela offer their reflections on the events that have defined the start of 2026.
What is the US’s game plan? Is this what the re-assertion of the Monroe Doctrine looks like? Why has Trump kidnapped President Maduro? What will be the effect on the Bolivarian process in Venezuela? What can we expect from other countries, in the region and in the rest of the world? How will Cuba be impacted by the latest developments? If the US is focusing on ‘hemispheric hegemony’, can it be expected to reduce its involvement in Asia and Europe? And what can we do to most effectively stand in solidarity with Venezuela?
