Russian Missiles Slam Kiev Responding to Ukraine Drone Attack on School Dormitory

Russian missiles and drones blasted the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Sunday, May 24 in an attack that went on for hours. It was reported that at least 90 cruise and ballistic missiles were used along with over 600 drones. Ukraine claims to have shot down many of the incoming ordinance but many, obviously, still got through.

This attack, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense was in retaliation for a Ukrainian drone attack on a college dormitory on May 22 in the city of Starobilsk in the Luhansk People’s Republic. Casualties from this attack included 21 young women and children and injured many more. Unsuccessful on the battlefield in the war that has been going on since 2022 Ukraine has resorted to widespread drone attacks deep into Russian territory. These often hit civilian targets, with no military value.

The attack on Kiev included the use of a Russian hyper-sonic Oreshnik missile that struck targets outside of the capital. The Oreshnik releases 36 separate warheads and, traveling at around 8,000 miles per hour, cannot be stopped by current anti-missile missiles. European and US leaders also took note of the Oreshnik use since this type of missile could be fitted with nuclear warheads.

A great danger of the Ukraine-Russia war spreading revolves around Ukraine’s drones flying or being launched from other nations. On April 16 Russia’s Security Council Secretary, Sergey Shoigu, warned “Recently, there has been an increase in Ukrainian drone strikes against Russia via Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia” He questioned whether those countries “deliberately provide their airspace, thereby becoming open accomplices in aggression against Russia” giving Russia the right to strike back. Such a response, while justified, is dangerous as all four are members of NATO. https://www.rt.com/russia/638524-russian-security-chief-warning-nato-states/

It has also been revealed by a former top Ukrainian military official that Ukraine depends on the European Union countries to provide parts essential for drone production. The Russian Ministry of Defense also has made public a list of EU corporations that manufacture the drone parts, especially for the long-range drones that are able to strike deep into Russia. https://www.rt.com/news/638518-myth-of-ukrainian-drones/

The EU has also gone along with President Donald Trumps demand to take on more of the financing of Ukraine’s military and economic needs. This demand flows from the US’s desire to shift towards greater confrontation with the People’s Republic of China. The New York Times revealed on April 22 that the EU is moving to extend a $106 billion loan to Ukraine. The Times added that “Ukraine would need to repay the no-interest loan only if Russia were to pay reparations.” Such an outcome is hard to imagine. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/22/world/europe/eu-loan-ukraine-pipeline-hungary.html

Not only has the European Union taken over major funding of the Western proxy war against Russia, but they also announced that they would confiscate $1.63 billion of interest on frozen Russian assets to go toward paying Ukraine’s debts to Western supporters. At the start of Russia’s Special Military Operation, Western nations froze about $300 billion of Russia’s assets held in Western depositories. Russia has repeatedly denounced this as “theft.” https://www.rt.com/news/636999-eu-russian-assets-ukraine/

European leaders face a developing problem as they increase military spending as demanded by Trump and boost aid to Ukraine. The New York Times, on March 31 described that the “trade-off is classically known as the ‘guns versus butter’ problem, and it has emerged as the defining political and fiscal challenge for European governments in the years to come.” Cuts to health care, social welfare programs and pensions are antagonizing voters across Europe. Some right-wing parties are attracting support for their opposition to these cuts.  https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/31/world/europe/europe-spending-problem-military-domestic.html

But it is the battlefield where wars are won or lost. Drone attacks on civilian or military targets will not be decisive. What is most notable is that Ukraine no longer talks about a “new offensive” or about “pushing Russia back to pre-war borders.” European support for Ukraine will only prolong death and destruction. At the same time EU militarism will cause destabilization of the European nations and could, possibly, draw some of them directly into the conflict.
