FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Keep it in the Streets June 6
Hundreds to March on in Downtown Milwaukee Day After Recall
MILWAUKEE — Dozens of community organizations and unions have pledged to march the day after the recall election to keep the movement to recall Scott Walker “in the streets” after the recall election on June 5.
Occupy organizer, Hannah Engber, said that the purpose of the rally is to put the winner of the gubernatorial race on notice that he is expected to be accountable to the citizens of Wisconsin and not to the people who provided the money for his political campaign.
Engber added, “We’re making it clear that the fight of the 99% for healthcare, education, union rights, and against racism and discrimination is not over after the recall election on June 5, regardless of who wins.”
The “Keep it in the Streets” rally will open at 5:15 pm at Pere Marquette Park at the intersection of State and Old World Third Streets, with speeches from sponsoring organizations, including members of AFSCME Local 82 and the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association (MTEA). A march through downtown Milwaukee will follow.
Occupy Milwaukee is making three specific demands of the next governor of Wisconsin: “1. Repeal Act 10 ( the law that stripped most bargaining rights from public employees)- Hands off unions and collective bargaining. No cuts to education or Badger Care; 2. Restore the Equal Pay Act – End workplace discrimination; 3. Tax the 1% – Hold the bankers and the 1% accountable for the economic crisis they created and stop funding cuts that hurt working people.”
Hundreds have pledged to march, while dozens of organizations representing tens of thousands of members have endorsed.
Endorsers include the Statewide Occupy Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Madison, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Appleton and St. Croix Falls), the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association, Voces de la Frontera, 9 to 5, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998, AFSCME Local 82, Students for a Democratic Society, the Milwaukee Graduate Assistants Association, the Milwaukee Fransiscan Action Network, Move to Amend, WI Bail Out the People Movement, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Milwaukeeans for a Better Tomorrow Tomorrow, Act Everywhere, Peace Action WI, Milwaukee Transit Riders Union, Citizen Action, Progressive Democrats of America, Casa Maria, and Welfare Warriors.
