“Sit Down and Shut Up” Ordinances Passed in Chicago City Council, Fight Back Continues

“Sit Down and Shut Up” Ordinances Passed in Chicago City Council

Joint statement by Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8) and Occupy Chicago

At 12:30 today, Rahm Emanuel officiated over the death of the Bill of Rights in the City Council chambers.

Ordinances designed to severely restrict First Amendment rights of speech and assembly were presented on December 14th.  The stated target was to prepare to repress protestors during the summits of NATO and the G8.

At first, aldermen and the media all agreed that no one would oppose Emanuel on this.

In response to mayor’s attack on civil liberties, the Coalition Against NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda (CANG8) joined together with Occupy Chicago and several unions to unite our efforts to defend of civil liberties in Chicago.  By last week, aldermen had felt so much pressure from constituents that they had to speak out.

Emanuel then moved to withdraw first one, and then another, of the most criticized pieces.  Protests continued to grow; Emanuel retreated further; the protests mounted, and he retreated even further.

Finally, a version was reached that the council opposition could vote for, hoping that the movement would not condemn them.  The final version is still a significant attack on democratic rights; its passage is a defeat for our movement.

The mayor has not achieved his true objective, though.  Emanuel looks at the new Chicago he has inherited, with protestors in so many places, and he wants to put the genie back in the bottle. It’s not possible.

We have the right to protest against war, austerity, and inequality.  Mayor Emanuel, you’ll see us in the streets of Chicago:  our streets.

Mr. Anthony Monteiro at Philly MLK Rally at AFSCME Council 33 Hall Jan. 16, 2012 / ‘MLK’s Message & Today’s Struggle’

“This is a year of decision. Either we fight or we don’t. They (Wall Street) have a strategy of total war against the working people of this country. We cannot have a strategy of partial fight back. It has to be total fight back. No matter what it takes. No matter what the sacrifice. No matter how long it takes.”

One Million Signatures to Recall Walker

http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/

From the WI AFL-CIO:

Brothers and Sisters,

We did it!  Over one million signatures have been collected to recall Gov. Scott Walker.  Later today, these signatures will be handed in to the Government Accountability Board for validation.  Together, union members and tens of thousands of grassroots volunteers have collected enough signatures to force special recall elections for Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, Sen. Pam Galloway, Sen. Terry Moulton, Sen. Scott Fitzgerald and Sen. Van Wanggaard.

That’s right, all targeted recall campaigns reached or surpassed their signature goals!  This is a historic moment in Wisconsin history.  The people of Wisconsin are taking charge of their democracy and taking back our government from a corporate politician.

Signature Totals

  • Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch – 845,000
  • Sen. Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls – 21,000+
  • Sen. Pam Galloway of Wausau -21,000+
  • Sen. Van Wanggaard of Racine – 24,000
  • Sen. Scott Fitzgerald – 20,600

The people have spoken loud and clear and we are ready to put an early end to Gov. Walker’s reign.  Next, the Government Accountability Board will begin validating signatures.  After the validating process is complete election dates will be determined.   Today is a day for celebration; tomorrow we will continue to educate our friends and neighbors on the disastrous affects of Gov. Walker’s agenda.

In Solidarity,

Phil Neuenfeldt, President
Stephanie Bloomingdale, Secretary-Treasurer

*Organizations Announce Plans for Actions During the Democratic
National Convention in September, and to Challenge City over Denial of
Permits*

Charlotte, NC — On the week honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a
coalition of social justice, community, and labor organizations are
announcing plans to protest during the Democratic National Convention.
There will be a press conference on *Wednesday, January 18, at 1pm
outside of the Time Warner Cable Arena*.

The Coalition to Protest at the DNC includes organizations from
across North Carolina, the South, and the U.S., and includes labor
organizations, groups fighting home foreclosures, peace groups,
students and youth, and many other groups and prominent activists.

Coalition organizers have called Charlotte, NC the “Wall Street of
the South.” They intend to target the two corporate parties and to
raise grievances about injustices that are perpetrated and funded by
the international banks that call Charlotte home. The three primary
demands of the Coalition are:

Good   jobs for all! Economic justice now. Make the banks and
corporations    pay for their crisis,

Money  for education, health care, housing and all human needs, not
for war         and incarceration,

Justice        for immigrants and all oppressed peoples! Stop the raids
and     deportations.

Speakers will announce plans to explore challenges to the City of
Charlotte’s denial of requests for permits to protest during the
DNC. They will also address the City’s current attempts to pass new
ordinances making it more difficult for organizations to exercise
their rights to freedom of speech and assembly during the convention.

“I don’t hear the Republican or Democratic Parties addressing
safe, quality jobs, with good benefits that would eliminate many of
the social needs that unemployed workers depend on to survive. Instead
they continue to focus on a capitalist strategy to bring industries to
the southern right-to-work states with little union density, competing
with tax payer dollars as incentives,” said Donna Dewitt, President
of the South Carolina AFL-CIO.

“We are pleased to be a part of the campaign to challenge the
hypocrisy of US corporate political parties. We’re here to demand an
end to the war on Black people, here and in Africa – from police
brutality and mass incarceration to Africom, and proxy wars across the
continent. The Democratic Party and Obama Administration claim to be
people oriented, but refuse to recognise and protect basic human
rights; they continue to imprison COINTELPRO/Civil Rights era
political activists while lecturing the world. Obama signing the NDAA
effectively suspends habeus corpus,” said Efia Nwangaza, Founder and
Director of the Malcolm X Center for Self Determination and chair of
the US Human Rights Network’s Political Prisoner/State Repression
Working Group.
