Call President Obama To Demand He Veto Indefinite Detention

http://www.stopfbi.net/

Call President Obama at 202-456-1111

Sisters and Brothers,

A serious attack on our civil liberties is underway and President Obama plans to sign it into law on Monday, December 26. Congress recently passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which has a provision that allows the president to authorize the military to detain anyone suspected of ‘terrorism’ indefinitely, inside or outside the United States, without trial.

The Committee to Stop FBI Repression urges you to contact President Obama and demand he veto “indefinite detention without trial.”

We need to do everything in our power to push back against repression.  Under the guise of preventing ‘terrorism’ our democratic rights are being taken away.  We have seen this in the case of the 24 anti-war and international solidarity activists who were raided by the FBI and/or called to the grand jury investigating “material support for Foreign Terrorist Organizations.”  We have seen this in the prosecution of veteran Chicano activist Carlos Montes in Los Angeles.

Over the past decade this repression has led to the jailing or deportation of thousands of Arabs and Muslims.  We need to say enough is enough. We need a presidential veto.

This type of repression happened before in 1942, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the U.S. military to round up 120,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps, without charges or trials. Years later a U.S. government commission called this a result of “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.” It was wrong then and it is wrong now.

Let President Obama know: “I do not want indefinite detention without trial to become law. Veto the National Defense Authorization Act.”

Call President Obama at 202-456-1111

Thanks for your immediate action,
your friends at the Committee to Stop FBI Repression.

Call Politicians To Demand Extension Of Unemployment Benefits

From WI Jobs Now, http://wisconsinjobsnow.org/

Janis Lortz is from Green Bay. Her husband is about to lose his emergency unemployment benefits. She works, but between her salary and his benefits it’s barely enough to scrape together the money they need to pay their mortgage and put food on their table. If Congress doesn’t act to extend these life-saving benefits by Dec. 31, Janis says they’ll have to sell their home.

See What Janis and Others Did to Fight Back!

The problem is that the Republican members of the US House voted against a bill that would have extended these benefits for 2 months, even though the majority of their Republican friends in the Senate voted to support it. After killing the bill, the House disbanded for the year and all the members skipped town. We wish that GOP Representatives from Wisconsin had voted to help working families, but they just followed the pack.

Nothing is written in stone. The 1.8 million families that will lose their unemployment insurance in January are counting on the support of all of us to make sure they’re not left out in the cold. That’s why were asking everyone to call the Republican Congressmen of Wisconsin to demand that they change direction, vote to agree with their Senate colleagues, and extend unemployment insurance before Dec. 31.

To quote Christine Owens of the National Employment Law Project:

“To rob the unemployed and their families of their essential lifeline just as the New Year begins, especially when a clear alternate path is available, is more than callous – it is unconscionable.”

Call Paul Ryan (202) 225-3031
Call Sean Duffy (202) 225-3365
Call Jim Sensenbrenner (202) 225-5101
Call Tom Petri (202) 225-2476
Call Reid Ribble (202) 225-5665
Call Speaker John Boehner (202) 225-0600

They think we’ll let it slide just because of the holidays. Let’s show them that they’ve only underestimated us again.

No U.S.-Israeli War Against Iran!

Reports today (12-22-2011) from the Telegraph newspaper in Britain are reporting that U.S.-Israeli war criminals are discussing possibly immediate plans to militarily attack Iran. The poor and working people of the U.S. must oppose any more wars that only benefit the rich. One out of every two people in the U.S. are now classified as poor and/or being in poverty. Millions are being foreclosed on. Between 30-45 million are unemployed or underemployed, the majority of whom are Black and Latino/a. Millions of children and youth/students either can’t go to school or are deep in debt because of student loans. We need money right here in the U.S. for human needs and not more war. We stand in solidarity with the Iranian people and their government. Don’t believe the lies of the U.S. government. Oppose any war on Iran! Demonstrate, Protest, Sponsor resolutions in your organization(s). No U.S.-Israeli war on Iran! Money for people’s needs not war!
