City Secretly Funds Investigation Against First Black Alderperson
Manitowoc city officials, both elected and non-elected, across numerous city departments, are colluding to conduct a secret investigation into the residency status of Mr. Aaron Bailey, the city’s first and only Black Alderperson. Open records requests by Crusaders Of Justicia and others attempting to obtain even the most basic information about (or even the existence) of the investigation have been improperly delayed or denied, excluding the public from knowing about activities of their government, contrary to Wisconsin open records law.
According to Manitowoc City Attorney Kathleen McDaniel, “a private citizen” engaged a private investigator to investigate the residency of Alderperson Bailey, and gave the report to Council President Eric Sitkiewitz. For some reason President Sitkiewitz and the city are concealing the identity of the anonymous accuser. Due to the secrecy surrounding the city’s handling of the accusation, the public is being left in the dark as to why residency requirements should embroil the city in a contentious and costly witch-hunt.
This is textbook structural racism. Residency requirements are bureaucratic barriers to participation in our supposedly representative government, which are working exactly as intended to exclude under-represented populations. Poor and minority people have far more instability and mobility in their personal lives, which makes it far harder to meet these unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles that have been put in place by privileged and powerful people, most of whom have the benefit of the stability that comes with owning their homes for long periods of time. Demanding proof of residency is a significant tool to exclude poor and minority people from participation in their government, and even in voting.

The 100,000-member MLK Labor Council, an AFL-CIO regional body of labor groups representing more than 150 unions in the Seattle, Washington, area, passed a resolution Wednesday that calls for a general strike if President Donald Trump does not respect the outcome of the November 3 election….
During a Tuesday night webinar hosted by the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee titled “What Can Workers Do to Stop Trump from Stealing the Election?” Association of Flight Attendants-CWA President Sara Nelson imparted lessons from her union’s largely successful strike during the government shutdown last year. Nelson’s repeated threats of a general strike proved instrumental in ending the shutdown.
She told more than 300 labor organizers and activists Tuesday that her union is working nonstop to pressure Congress to pass a new COVID-19 relief package, saying, “What we need to be doing to lock in this relief bill is critical for the fights forward, and if we are all taking part in that and coming out for relief-now actions and locking this in; this is going to be a large part of building the broad base support for the fact that it’s … working people who demand that our government work for us.”
Responding to a question about economically strategic locations for strikes, Nelson said, “If we can control when and where [we strike], and we think about how we can strategically place pressure in places that are going to have a major impact, we actually don’t have to have a general strike across the entire country. We can have a major impact if we know that we can shut down one specific place, and it doesn’t even have to be for a very long period of time. If we take control of the schedule of the country, we can have a tremendous effect.”
Progressive groups are also organizing toward a national general strike. Organizations including the Moratorium NOW! Coalition in Detroit, the Wisconsin Bail Out the People Movement, and the People’s Alliance-Bay Area have put out calls to organize a broad-based People’s Committees to Defend Democratic Rights that would call upon union locals to conduct a vote on authorizing a general strike in the event of a coup attempt….

Madison, November 4, 2020: Defend the Vote: Don’t Let Trump Steal the Election!
State Capitol, Madison – 6 P.M.
More info: Our Wisconsin Revolution
The stakes have never been higher. Working class people face the combined threat of the pandemic, an economic crisis, and climate change.Trump insists the election results will only be legitimate if he wins. He has made clear threats to steal the election through some combination of voter suppression, ballot tampering, and prematurely declaring victory before all ballots have been counted.
We won’t tolerate four more years of Trump’s racist, sexist, xenophobic, and anti-worker agenda! We urgently need to prepare for mass action and even strikes if Trump tries to steal the election. If the past four years have shown us anything, it’s that the Democratic establishment can’t effectively stand up to Trump. If they couldn’t stop Trump’s massive tax cuts for the wealthy, the horrific ICE arrests and detention, or the nomination of two – maybe three – ultraconservative Supreme Court justices, we can’t afford to sit back and rely on them now!
Mass protest is what forced Trump to walk back his Muslim Ban. Mass action – led by TSA, air traffic controllers, and flight attendants – is what forced Trump to end the longest government shutdown in history. Mass action fought back against racist policing in the largest protest movement in US history this summer.
Everyone around the country who is opposed to Trump’s agenda needs to be ready to take to the streets on November 4th to stop Trump from stealing this election! Nobody should be declared winner until every vote is counted.
WE DEMAND:
– All out to fight Trump’s attacks on democracy and make sure every vote is counted!
– Extend mail in voting to all voters for all elections going and make Election Day a Paid National Holiday so all working class people can voteNO MATTER WHO LEGITIMATELY WINS the election, we demand- MEDICARE for ALL,
– NO EVICTIONS, FORECLOSURES or UTILITY SHUTOFFS during the course of the Pandamic!
– TAX the RICH, NO BUDGET CUTS to public services for working people, youth, seniors and people with disabilities
– DEFUND the JAILS and POLICE by at least 50%, cancel the $225 million Dane County jail plan AND put the money to housing, education, jobs programs and health services.
We need as many people on board as possible! Contact us if your organization can co-host and mobilize!

Forward November Fourth | A Post-Election Online Gathering for Wisconsin
Hosted by WI WILL WIN, Allies for Black Lives – Madison
No matter who wins the Presidential election on November 3rd, we’ll have to continue the fight for socio-economic, racial and environmental justice here in Wisconsin. Racism, sexism, xenophobia and all forms of hate and greed existed before Trump and they’ll continue once he’s out of office. It will be incumbent upon the leaders of Wisconsin to keep us focused on the next steps we must take to win victories small and large throughout our state.
