Black Lives Matter Vigil

This Black Lives Matter Vigil is to honor and remember the Black lives that were lost at the hands of police officers.

Milwaukee #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd protests extended into the seventh day. White supremacists threatened to assassinate Milwaukee activist Frank Nitty requiring armed protection for Frank during the march. Sylville Smith’s father joined the rally and spoke to marchers. Sylville was murdered by a Milwaukee Police officer.

In Defense of Black Life: Cambodian Community Conv

Dear Cambodians,

Now is the time for us to show up as survivors and to defend Black lives. We cannot remain neutral as Black people face genocide in this country. We must roll up our sleeves, hit the streets, and do our part until Black Lives Matter.

Cambodians, we know what it means for our lives to be taken by armed agents of the state while no one pays attention, here and in our homeland. We know what it means to be forced to find peace with our trauma and to find justice on our own without solidarity from the outside world. We know it’s difficult to live with the contradictions of our experiences in this moment. We must challenge ourselves to defend Black lives.

Southeast Asian Freedom Network invites you to join us for a panel and conversation about what it means to be Cambodian in this moment.

“Been Hard To Breathe” March For Maternal Justice

In Dane county black newborns have a 9.3 mortality rate while white babies have a 3.7 rate. Black mothers and pregnant people have a 5 times higher chance of dying in labor. Implicit Bias, racism and obstetric violence goes unchecked within the healthcare system and we can not forget about this in our fight for equity. We are calling for attention to be made to the lack of informed consent in hospitals. We are calling for accountability and action being taken when pregnant patients express the feeling of being neglected or ignored. We are asking and demanding equitable pay for our black and brown birth workers.
To fight this racism, it must first be acknowledged, recognized and explicitly named.

March with us from the Capital at noon, June 6th, where we will call to defund the police. 1 set of riot gear is the monetary equivalent to 50 sets of PPE.
From there we will walk to Meriter and St. Mary’s where personal stories, experiences and creative writing will be shared. Our voices will be heard
Please wear PPE. Snacks and water will be available
From birth, black babies fight for their chance to live. For us it’s BEEN HARD TO BREATHE.
