Ford Auto Workers in Turkey sent a solidarity message to the striking GM workers in the USA

Ford Auto Workers in Turkey who are in the process of contract negotiations have sent a message of solidarity to the striking General Motors workers in the USA: “The rights won in one country are a source of hope for workers in other countries”.

A Ford Otosan Worker
Kocaeli

We would first like to offer our greetings to the striking workers at General Motors in America. We thank them for the message of support that they sent to us metal workers within the MESS (Metal Sanayicileri Sendikası, or Metal Industrialists Union) group contract. We believe that they will win all the rights they are entitled to, including fair wages and job security.

The problems faced by the workers of the world are the same everywhere, no matter where they are, regardless of language, religion, and color. They face many different problems, like struggling for fairer wages, worker health and security, mitigating the turn to subcontractors, and unemployment. The process of collective bargaining is an important issue for us as workers. For this reason, positive results can only be achieved with solidarity, unity, and cooperation. We believe that the workers at General Motors in America will attain significant victories over the course of their strike through unity and cooperation. Because in our country, we have the right to strike, but in name only; in practice, this right is always forbidden and deferred, and workers’ rights are always stolen away by the High Council of Arbitrators.

Wherever we may be, we workers and laborers must join forces. The rights won by workers in every part of the world have been and will remain a source of hope for workers in other countries. We as metal workers have already spent a month on the collective bargaining process. There has still been no progress. We as metal workers know that when workers mobilize their union, they must constantly maintain a steady stream of information, and they must be disruptive. It is only by expending labor that victories can be achieved.

To our worker friends on strike in America;

We achieved this process of unity and cooperation during the ‘metal storm’ resistance in 2015. We achieved significant victories then by joining forces. A strike is a tough process, it is a difficult time, but when unity, cooperation, and class solidarity are achieved, a conscious working class with a strong will to fight in public space, no matter rain or shine, will always prevail. Our families, workers in other sectors, the media, and tradespeople have provided the necessary support over this rightful process, and as a result, even though sacrifices were made, great victories were achieved.

We have full faith in you. Through unity and cooperation, you will achieve the victories you deserve for a humane quality of life. We too will show the same resolve in our collective bargaining process, and we will find a path to a successful contract. At the same time, we will continue to follow your rightful strike process and we hope to celebrate your good news. As workers at Ford Otosan, we extend our greetings to all our striking friends and comrades.

“WE HOPE YOU GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU DESERVE”

Forty nine thousand workers at 31 factories and 21 other facilities across nine states have participated in a strike organized by the United Auto Workers (UAW) Union in the United States against automotive giant General Motors (GM). The workers want higher wages, comprehensive health insurance, and an end to the temporary worker program. Workers waiting in front of the GM Parts Distribution Center in Philadelphia sent a message through our reporter to the MESS workers in Turkey who are in the process of contract negotiations. The metal workers in the United States wrote “Good luck Turkish steelworkers!” on the bottom of the union’s strike banners, and their spokesperson offered this message for the article we published on 30 September: “We are standing up for fair wages. We’re standing up for job security. We’re standing up for affordable, quality healthcare. We’re standing up for our temporary employees who are being taken advantage of. I heard that the steel workers of Turkey are also going through a collective bargaining process, and I want to let you know that we stand together with you. We hope that the collective bargaining process comes through for you guys. And we hope you guys get exactly what you deserve.”

Demands from the #CLOSEmsdf Campaign Based on Newly Released Parole & Probation Report from Justice Lab at Columbia University:

The Wisconsin Community Corrections Story

On January 22, 2019, the Justice Lab at Columbia University released a scathing report commissioned by #CLOSEmsdf Campaign partner JustLeadershipUSA, entitled The Wisconsin Community Corrections Story. This vital report adds quantitative and qualitative analysis to support what directly impacted people and low income and people of color, especially Black and Native American, have known for decades: there is deep harm, and racial and economic injustice embedded in Wisconsin’s probation and parole policies which exemplify and fuel incarceration.

Report from Yemen

https://fighting-words.net/2019/10/04/report-from-yemen/

By Randi Nord

Speaking to press on Sep. 28, Brigadier-General Yahya Saree announced the success of an operation dubbed “Victory from God” carried out in Najran province by Yemen’s Army and Popular Committees. Revealing only minimal details at the time, Saree said Yemeni forces managed to lay siege to three Saudi-backed military brigades as well as an entire large faction of the army — all during the first 72 hours of the operation.

“Only 72 hours after the start of the operation, our forces applied the siege on three deceived brigades and a whole faction of the Saudi army,” he said.

On Sunday, Saree announced the first phase of a multi-tier operation. The first phase lasted 72 hours during which the Saudi coalition launched 300 air raids. According to Saree, Yemen’s Army and Popular Committees in collaboration with the Yemeni Missile Force carried out at least 20 operations on targets in Saudi Arabia, including one “sensitive target” in Riyadh, which were designed to divert attention away from Najran.

It worked. Apache helicopters and warplanes left the Najran region and Yemeni forces were left to launch a successful ambush and siege against enemy troops.

Brigadier-General Saree announced that during the month-long operation, Yemeni forces successfully captured not only over 2,000 Saudi mercenaries but also several high-ranking Saudi military officers and soldiers. Yemenis are currently holding the captives as prisoners at secret locations and have reassured their families that Yemen’s Army and Popular Committees are taking all necessary measures to protect them from Saudi coalition airstrikes.

Saree revealed that many of the more than 2,000 prisoners captured were children and mercenaries of varying nationalities. He pointed out Riyadh’s violation of international law by thrusting children to defend its border and front line.

According to Brigadier-General Saree, protecting the prisoners posed quite a challenge initially. Upon capturing the Saudi brigades and platoon, Saudi coalition warplanes attempted to strike their positions as they fled and surrendered to Yemeni forces. This mirrors and aligns with an attack on September 1 when Saudi Arabia thwarted a prisoner swap deal by bombing three prison facilities in Yemen, killing over 100 of their own fighters held in the buildings and injuring dozens more.

As part of the Victory from God operation, Yemeni forces also successfully seized copious amounts of Saudi coalition military equipment including hundreds of military armored vehicles and weapons caches.

But it doesn’t end there.

Yemen’s Army and Popular Committees also managed to liberate 350 kilometers or about 217 miles of territory in all directions as part of the month-long operation.

Over the course of the war, Ansarullah and Yemeni forces have expanded their operations behind enemy lines in Najran, Aseer, and Jizan province in response to the Saudi-led coalition’s airstrike campaign which specifically targets civilian infrastructure like homes, schools, and hospitals as well as large civilian gatherings like funerals, weddings, and crowded weekend markets.

Aseer, Najran, and Jizan used to be part of Yemen but were seized by the Saudi Kingdom during a war in 1934.

Don’t be fooled by the mainstream media’s portrayal of Yemen’s Army and Popular Committees as barefoot nomads and cave dwellers. Most of Yemen’s national army has joined Ansarullah against the Saudi-backed coalition. Yemeni troops operating in Najran include advanced special forces such as a sniper unit which boasts hundreds of confirmed kills each year.

According to the previous estimates from last year, reports suggested that Yemeni forces controlled “hundreds” of miles beyond the Saudi border in these provinces. Riyadh, embarrassed by its failure to secure its own southern border, has refused to comment publicly on the matter.
