Pro-Palestine Activists Occupy Israeli Weapons Factory in UK

“The weapons made here are used to maintain Israel’s system of apartheid and ensure the ordinary people of Gaza are kept in an open air prison.”

Pro-Palestine activists occupied a weapons factory in Oldham, Greater Manchester Monday as part of annual protests in solidarity with Palestine. The factory produces a number of high-tech equipment for the Israeli armed forces.

“They work closely with the Israeli military to develop increasingly lethal weapons, which are then tested on Palestinians and sold as ‘battle-tested’ to governments around the world, including the British government…It is deplorable that they have four factories in the UK where they are able to manufacture their deadly weapons with impunity.” said activist Emily Davis.

Protesters blocked roads around the factory and occupied the roof unfurling pro-Palestinian banners. The factory in Greater Manchester has been owned by Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense company, since 2007. The factory exports a number of weapons to Israel, including tank parts and white phosphorous, a chemical weapon which is banned under international law.

“The weapons made here are used to maintain Israel’s system of apartheid and ensure the ordinary people of Gaza are kept in an open air prison. As Elbit profits from their deaths and suffering, it is the duty of people around the world take action in solidarity,” said protester Ben Hart to the Morning Star newspaper.

Another protester Janet Hawkes spoke to the local Manchester Evening News explaining the objectives behind the demonstrations. “We want to send a message to the UK government. We want Elbit out of Greater Manchester.”

Elbit has long been targeted by the BDS movement. In 2014, the authorities in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul announced that they would cancel a large contract with the Israeli company following pressure from social movements.

“Our government has always given centrality to the promotion of peace and human rights and considers the demands of the social movements an important voice that needs to be heard. Today’s announcement is a logical consequence of this,” Tarson Nuñez, a member of Brazil’s Workers Party (PT), and then a member of the Brazilian government, said of that decision against Elbit.

MECAWI/Moratorium Now Coalition Statement: ‘United States Seeks to Initiate Yet Another War in Middle East; This Time in Iran’

United States Seeks to Initiate Yet Another War in Middle East; This Time in Iran
A discussion by members of the Moratorium NOW! Coalition and the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) on the current crisis generated by the administration of United States President Donald Trump at its last meeting on June 24, 2019, concluded that it was warranted to issue the following statement in opposition to the current course towards war and occupation:
We condemn the hostile and provocative behavior on the part of the U.S. administration in regard to the threats of military attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Although Trump claims that he has for now reconsidered an aerial strike on the Tehran government, the intensification of the sanctions regime against the people of this sovereign state only stokes tensions which could easily lead to a full-blown war. We demand that all sanctions against Iran be lifted immediately and talks should resume on the salvaging of the JCOPA nuclear deal and the eventual normalization of relations.
It has been 40 years since the Iranian Revolution of 1979 where the masses of people rose up and overthrew the Washington-backed regime of the Shah. The will of the Iranian people must be respected in any diplomatic approach by the U.S.
In addition, we also oppose the recently-held “Prosperity to Peace” conference by the U.S. in Bahrain on the Palestinian question. All parties and political interests in Palestine rejected the gathering as another attempt to perpetuate the occupation of Palestine and to stifle the creation of a viable, contigious and genuinely independent Palestinian state.
The Trump administration’s bogus recognition of the holy city of Jeruslam as part of the Israeli state is a clear effort to destabilize the Palestinian people and fortify the Israeli occupation. We stand firmly with the struggles and aspirations of the Palestinian nation and its people.
Finally we categorically denounce the continued arms transfers from the U.S. and all other imperialists states to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The monarchy in Riyadh suppresses the basic democratic rights of its citizens and residents as a fundamental policy of its government.
Moreover, the Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates (UAE) fuedal regimes are leading on behalf of imperialism the brutal genocidal war against the people of Yemen, the poorest country in the region. Tens of thousands have died in the massive bombings and ground operations since March 2015. The war against Yemen has resulted in the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world today where cholera and other prevntable diseases are the direct outcome of Washington’s foreign policy. The Pentagon supplies the warplanes, ordnances, refuelling technology and targeting methodology that enables this onslaught against the masses in Yemen.
Overall we want to express our solidarity with the oppressed and struggling peoples of the region in their fight for liberation, social justice, peace and prosperity. Our plight in the U.S. as oppressed and working class people has worsened as a direct by-product of the imperialist militarism of the White House and Wall Street.
End U.S. Imperialist Influence in the Middle East!
Hands Off Iran!
Freedom for the Palestinian People!
Long Live the Struggle Against Imperialism!

Southern Workers Meet to Launch Workplace Medicare for All Campaign

#OrganizetheSouth      #Medicare4All

Southern Workers Assembly

More resources available online at http://southernworker.org/medicare4all/

Over the weekend of June 15-16, over 40 Southern workers from several unions including the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), National Nurses United, International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422 met for a Workers School and to launch a Southern Workers Medicare for All campaign. ILA local 1422 hosted the meeting in their impressive union hall.

In the lead up to the 2020 elections, the Southern Workers Assembly is encouraging all workers organizations to raise up a workers program demanding #UnionsforAll,  wages of $15 per hour for all workers, end Right-to-Work (for less) laws, and the demand for affordable healthcare, specifically for the passage of the bills in US Congress for expanded and improved Medicare for All (HR1384/S1129).  Many of presidential candidates are split, or have different plans for fixing the broken US healthcare system. By having a clearly-defined, unifying demand, we can advance our struggles during this electoral period, regardless of who wins the election.  The SWA believes that by building a workers-led, Southern movement for Medicare for All it can help to draw non-union workers into our movement, and build union-workplace organization across the South.

A major part of this campaign is building workplace-based committees, because inside the workplace is where we have the most power to impact society. These committees can lead the education of workers, including doing outreach to non-union workplaces with informational leaflets about the campaign, given that most all workers still primarily receive health insurance through their employer.  Improved Medicare for All would reduce the reliance of workers on their employers, by providing every access to quality healthcare whether you are employed or not employed. It would also take bargaining for health care off the table, which most unions spend lots of time and clout bargaining over. Instead, this energy could be spent on bargaining members better wage increases, paid time off, safety protocols and other much needed improvements.

As part of this campaign, the SWA hopes to organize city-wide committees, lead by workplace organizations to do broader workplace and community outreach, eventually hosting public Town Hall meetings with the plan to pass resolutions in city and county councils across the South. Already at least three southern cities including St. Petersburg, FL,  Durham, NC and Carrboro, NC have already passed such resolutions.

The campaign plans to have bi-weekly conference calls every other Sunday night at 6pm. If you would be interested in coordinating for your area, or joining these calls, please contact us at info@southernworker.org or 919-539-2051.
