With Extradition Imminent, the Implications of Assange’s Persecution for Journalism and Democracy

https://bit.ly/2YNKJVP

In light of Wikileaks tweeting that Julian Assange will be forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian embassy in a matter of “hours or days, MPN brings you a piece by Whitney Webb first published last June on the dangerous implications of the persecution of the Wikileaks founder.

Due to recent claims made by WikiLeaks on Twitter that Julian Assange will be forcibly removed from the Ecuadorian embassy in London in a matter of “hours or days,” MintPress News has brings you this editorial first published last June by journalist Whitney Webb in order to again highlight the dangerous precedent for journalism, free speech and much more the end of Assange’s asylum — and his likely extradition to the United States — would set.

LONDON  (Opinion) – Today marks the sixth anniversary of Julian Assange’s ascent to the position of the world’s most well-known political refugee after daring to be the public face of the ground-breaking transparency organization WikiLeaks. Arbitrarily detained in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for more than half a decade, Assange’s precarious situation – a product of the U.S. and U.K. governments’ efforts to destroy and silence him forever – threatens to devolve into tragedy.

The struggle against Donald Trump

https://fighting-words.net/2019/05/17/the-struggle-against-donald-trump/

By Chris Fry

The president is an unabashed white supremacist. His racist policies are designed to roll back gains hard-won through incredible struggle. He travels the country spouting the vilest bigotry. His political “base” includes terrorist groups like the Knights of the Golden Circle, the Knights of the White Camellia and, of course, the Ku Klux Klan. Individual Black people are shot down in the streets with impunity. Brutal massacres kill dozens at a time. This president’s policies arouse such outrage among the people that demands for his ouster through impeachment spread from the halls of Congress to most of the country.

The year is not 2019; it is 1868. And the president is not Donald Trump; it is Andrew Johnson.

The squandering of the “Dump Trump” movement

Today, the leadership of the Democratic Party is in a deep quandary entirely of its own making. From day one of Donald Trump’s inauguration, millions of people have poured into the streets to protest against him: from millions of women marching against his crude misogyny, to massive protests against his bigoted anti-Muslim ban, to incredible outrage against his openly racist attacks against migrants that included tearing children away from the arms of their parents and placing them in cages like animals. Trump’s pro-Nazi statements about Charlottesville sent shockwaves of anger and disgust through workers and oppressed across the country.

This massive outrage expressed itself in a huge electoral victory for the Democratic Party in the 2018 elections, where they won control of the House of Representatives. Clearly, ousting Trump through the legal mechanism of impeachment topped the agenda of millions of voters, particularly those from the oppressed communities. This fervor was so deep that even some who called themselves “socialist” ousted the more corporate Democratic politicians and took office.

And what have Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer done with this popular movement to oust Trump, two years before the next election? They narrowed their effort against him entirely to his election campaign’s supposed “collusion with Russia.” They relied entirely on the Mueller investigation from that bastion of repression, the Justice Department (DOJ), to indict Trump. That, they refuse to do.

In the midst of all this, Speaker Pelosi announced that impeachment is “off the table.” She and Senator Schumer held a “friendly” meeting with Trump to discuss an “infrastructure” program, which is, of course, a pipedream that will never happen, but it does show the complete capitulation of the Democratic Party leadership to the Boss Trump regime.

Now the Trump regime shows its complete contempt for its impotent Democratic Party opponents, arrogantly defying all subpoenas for White House witnesses and documents. Instead of launching impeachment hearings based on this defiance, as well as all the racist, sexist, anti-worker, vile Trump policies that are aimed to sweep away all the gains from decades of struggle by the workers and oppressed, the House leaders are meekly announcing plans to going to court to file “contempt citations,” which will accomplish nothing.

They have not even uttered a whisper against Trump’s war threats against Venezuela, Iran, China, Syria or anywhere else.

Like their Republican Party counterparts, these Democratic Party minions of Wall Street corporations and bankers, who are enraptured by Trump’s tax cuts and “deregulation,” are telling the workers and oppressed that we must endure two more years of Trump’s atrocities so that we can finally vote for one of their little army of Democratic candidates….

This May marks the 10 year anniversary of the abduction and disappearance of Melissa Roxas, a Filipina American, health worker, poet, and human rights activist. Melissa was participating in a medical mission in Tarlac, Philippines on May 19, 2009 when she was abducted and psychologically tortured for six days in a military camp by elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Massive public outcry from the Philippines, United States, and across the world led to her release on May 25, 2009. Since then she has filed her case with the Department of Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court, Commission on Human Rights, filed complaints with the US State Department and United Nations, testified at the 2015 International People’s Tribunal and spoken out on major media outlets demanding justice for her and all victims of state-sponsored violence in the Philippines.

Pastor Betty Rendon Online Petition

SIGN PETITION: https://vdlf.org/freebettyrendonpetition/

Voces is asking supporters and members to sign and share with your networks this online petition in support of Pastor Betty Rendon and her husband Carlos Hincapie. This is an ongoing situation after an immigration raid on May 8th 2019 in which Pastor Betty, her husband, a relative, their daughter, and granddaughter were were all swept up by ICE agents at gunpoint in their Chicago home. Their daughter, Paula Hincapie, is a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Despite this protected status, it was the intention of ICE to arrest and deport her.

It is only through bringing public attention to these matters and demanding that the order of supervision against Paula be removed that ICE made the decision to do so. Paula was released from the order of supervision on May 15th, 2019, after a press conference that occured prior to her scheduled check-in with ICE.

SIGN PETITION: https://vdlf.org/freebettyrendonpetition/

Following a community vigil in solidarity with Pastor Betty and her family outside of the Kenosha detention center in Kenosha Wisconsin, Pastor Betty and her husband, Carlos, were transferred to the Pulaski Detention Center in Ullin, IL. The other family member who was arrested, Felipe, was also transferred to McHenry Detention Center in Woodstock, IL. Since Felipe was not receiving necessary medical care he accepted a stipulated removal order of deportation to access medical care. It is urgent that their be a strong public outcry to achieve the release of Pastor Betty and her family. This family’s experience highlights the actual implementation of the Trump administration’s “shock-and-awe” plan to arrest and detain thousands of parents and children in a targeted operation against families in major cities across the U.S.

The release of Paula from the threat of deportation and the reunification with her 5-year old daughter is an example of what’s possible when people unite and decry abuse of power, human rights violations and the misuse of public resources. However, this family’s fight is far from over.

Sign the petition below directed to: Louis Zamora, Acting Field Office Director of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to approve the stay of removal from deportation for Pastor Betty and Carlos Hincapie. It also calls on them to be released from detention so that they can be reunited with their daughter, granddaughter, their congregation and community.

Advocates and Faith Communities to Rally in Support of Pastor Betty Rendon and Carlos Hincapie

Voces de la Frontera

PLEASE SIGN PETITION: https://vdlf.org/freebettyrendonpetition/

CHICAGO – Two weeks after Betty Rendón and Carlos Hincapié were arrested at their Chicago home as part of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that has destroyed their family, advocates and faith communities will rally in their support outside ICE’s Chicago office as the couple’s attorney requests a stay of removal.

Pastor Betty, her husband Carlos, a relative and their daughter, Paula Hincapie, were all swept up by ICE agents at gunpoint in their Chicago home. Paula is a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Despite Paula’s protected status, it was the intention of ICE to arrest and deport her until public light was brought to her case.

Paula’s 5 year old daughter, Layla, witnessed the entire home raid take place and was traumatized by the experience. “My daughter witnessed the entire raid and to this day she cries for her grandparents, wondering when they are coming home,” said Paula. “Layla is now afraid of the police which she associates with ICE. While I am grateful to be reunited with my daughter, our family is not whole until my parents and Layla’s grandparents, who Layla calls ‘Abu’ and ‘Lito,’ are home with us.”

Pastor Betty and Carlos remain in ICE detention at Pulaski County Jail in southern Illinois and are represented by attorneys from the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) through the City of Chicago’s Legal Protection Fund. Since the couple’s arrest, more than 65 organizations have submitted letters of support through the Emaus Evangelical Lutheran Church in Racine, Wisconsin, where Betty is a student pastor, and more than 13,000 people have signed a petition requesting that ICE halt the couple’s deportation to Colombia and release them from detention.

“Pastor Betty and her family’s experience highlights the actual implementation and consequences of the Trump administration’s ‘shock-and-awe’ plan to arrest and detain thousands of families in major cities across the U.S.,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “The fact that this attack is against a Dreamer, a Pastor and an entire family in a militaristic style operation demands that the American public and people of all faiths unite to protect this family and prevent the further implementation of the Trump Administration’s continued campaign to terrorize and separate immigrant families.”

Reverend Paul Erickson, Bishop of Greater Milwaukee Synod, ELCA said, “I’m extremely disappointed that our government would choose to use their powers in a way that sows fear and tears families apart. We are calling on our leaders to adhere to a higher law, one that respects the right of individuals to flee from violence and honors the dignity of each person.”

Voces de la Frontera, the Racine Interfaith Coalition and Lutheran religious leaders are calling for a national day of action on United Nation’s World Refugee Day on June 20th to gather for a national vigil in Chicago outside of the ICE office. In the weeks leading up to June 20th, we are inviting people to organize local vigils outside of their local ICE offices and deliver a letter calling for the release of Pastor Betty and her husband and to end the escalated attacks on immigrant families.
