Indigenous People Want Name Change of Historic Neighborhood – Representative of Justice For Jonathon Tubby Speaks

By Detroit Fighting Words Staff
A rally, march and cultural event was held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 on the eastside of Detroit in the residential district known as “Indian Village.” A Native American resident of the neighborhood hosted the event which attracted many Indigenous youth, among others. [Read the original letter to the neighborhood association calling for the name change.]
Various organizations spoke in support of changing the name which has no relevance to Native people historically. Waawiiyaatanong Resurgence, Moratorium NOW! Coalition and Detroit Will Breathe were three of the organizations which delivered solidarity statements.
Sarah Wunderlich of the family of Jonathon Tubby of the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin spoke to the crowd over the phone on the police killing of this Native youth by the Green Bay authorities in 2018. [ . [Learn more about the case at #SayHisName #JusticeForJonathonTubby #IndigenousLivesMatter ]
Cultural presentations including music and dance were provided. Hadassah Greensky and Sarah Torres performed for the audience gathered on the lawn and sidewalk.
Later activists marched through the neighborhood to engage homeowners about the proposed non-offensive name change.

Movements in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe: Free the Denver anti-racist organizers!
Note from the PSL: We are deeply appreciative of the many solidarity statements we have received from around the country and the world. The statement below comes from movements and member organizations of the International Peoples’ Assembly, which is active across Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. If your organization would like to offer a statement, please send it to info@pslweb.org. We will be collecting and posting more statements soon. Individuals can also sign the petition demanding freedom for the arrested organizers here and make a donation to provide support for their case here.
The movements and member organizations of the International Peoples’ Assembly make an international call for solidarity with the political prisoners of Denver, USA, arrested on September 17, for leading in the massive anti-racist protest movement that has taken to the streets demanding justice for George Floyd, Elijah McClain and other victims of racist police brutality in the United States.
In complex and repressive operation, four members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) who have organized large Black Lives Matter protests have been arrested: Russell Ruch, Lillian House, Joel Northam and Eliza Lucero. They are still in jail, except for one person. All four face multiple felony charges and many misdemeanours (including the bizarre and ridiculous charge of “kidnapping”), which can sentence them to many years in prison.
These political prisoners have not committed crimes. They are being criminalized only for exercising their right to protest for justice and because they have worked closely with other activists and relatives of victims of police brutality to expand their cases.
Their imprisonment is a trap aimed at stopping the PSL and the anti-racist movement in Denver, which is part of a wave of nationwide repression against the Black Lives Matter movement, promoted directly from the White House, in coordination with the governors and local police chiefs and police departments across the country.
Furthermore, this is a political attack against the entire international anti-racist movement. Therefore, it is essential that we mobilize solidarity with the political prisoners of the anti-racist struggle in the United States in all regions of the world, demanding the immediate release of the people arrested and the dismissal of the multiple charges against them. Click here to sign the petition to drop all the charges.

FRSO stands in solidarity with anti-racist activists arrested in Denver
The Freedom Road Socialist Organization condemns the repression of the people’s movement that occurred in Denver, Colorado on September 17. Six organizers were arrested at their homes, in parking lots, and while driving. All six were active leaders in protests calling for justice for Elijah McClain and other victims of police brutality. Four of those arrested are members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and all are facing trumped-up charges including inciting a riot, kidnapping and theft. These charges are absolutely bogus and are obviously designed to try to crush dissent and silence the movement against police crimes in Denver. We stand in unwavering solidarity with these activists and salute their hard work in building this movement.
This attack on activists in Colorado is just another example of the expanding state repression against our movements, no doubt coordinated at the very top by Trump and the U.S. Attorney General. From the rhetoric of ‘Antifa thugs burning cities,’ to the use of chemical weapons against protesters and the mobilization of far-right militias to maim and kill protesters, it’s obvious that the current administration and its supporters are at war with the Black lives movement currently sweeping the country.
We see this wave of repression building up across the country from Portland, Oregon to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Tallahassee, Florida. It continues a long history of state repression against leftists and other progressive forces in the United States.
We in Freedom Road Socialist Organization are no stranger to this repression. On September 24, 2010, 23 anti-war activists, including members of FRSO, were raided and subpoenaed in a coordinated attack by the FBI, on bogus charges of ‘material support for terrorism.’ Facing down many decades in prison, we were ultimately able to beat back the attack through mass mobilization and popular support.
It is in this spirit of resistance and solidarity that we stand with the protesters facing repression in Denver, and pledge to mobilize and assist to free those imprisoned and get their charges dropped, and beat back this vicious attack. Though the ruling class may try, there is no amount of repression that can defeat a mass movement demanding justice!
In solidarity,
Freedom Road Socialist Organization

Housing Activists Make Plans to Fight Looming Mass Evictions
Center for Disease Control and Prevention issues moratorium on evictions amid burgeoning crisis
By Abayomi Azikiwe Global Research, September 17, 2020
A recent moratorium issued by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided a window of relief to millions facing evictions due to payment arrears on their rents and mortgages.
Perhaps as an election ploy by the current administration, the question of public health is paramount when a country is experiencing the largest outbreak of an infectious disease in more than a century.
This measure comes amid one of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression during 1929-1941.
Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of millions have been thrown out of work in the United States. The administration of President Donald J. Trump is overseeing the most deadly spread of the pandemic internationally.
Trump continues to blame the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for the failures of his oval office to take preventative and adequate mitigation efforts aimed at halting the spread of the disease. Since February, nearly 200,000 people have died due to COVID-19 while more than 6 million were infected with the highly contagious illness.
Housing activists across the U.S. are grappling with the significance of the CDC moratorium and what actions are needed to protect working and impoverished people from being thrown out of their homes irrespective of government policy. Many are concerned about what will happen after the moratorium expires and whether it will be extended by whichever candidate wins the November presidential election.
As part of the process of movement building and political coordination, a public meeting known as “Liberation Mondays” was held in the city of Detroit on September 14 which was hosted by the General Baker Institute (GBI). Additional sponsors of the gathering were the Moratorium NOW! Coalition, Detroit Will Breathe (DWB), the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) in Detroit, the Black-Brown Alliance of DSA, among others.
Several of the leading organizations concerned and working on the housing crisis in Detroit were present. This event represented a perspective on housing that is in line with the current national and international struggles against police violence and institutional racism. DWB, which has led demonstrations in Detroit and the suburbs against police misconduct for over three months, were a key component in the meeting.
Those speaking from the panel assembled were Agnes Hitchcock of the Call Em out Coalition, a grouping which has existed for more than a decade geared towards holding public officials accountable to the people of Detroit. Also Monica Lewis-Patrick represented We the People of Detroit, an organization committed to ensuring clean running water for all residents of the city and Tristan Taylor, an organizer for DWB. The forum was chaired by the Black-Brown Alliance of DSA and Kenya Fentress of Black Lives Matter across 8 Mile.
The Detroit Eviction Defense (DED) coalition had two representatives who spoke to the escalating housing crisis in the city. Jim Dwight said during his comments that the majority of people coming to DED for assistance were African American women. Detroit is an overwhelming African American populated municipality which has undergone decades of underdeveloped and systematic oppression. Detroit was subjected to the illegal imposition of emergency management and bankruptcy from 2013-2014. Since then the corporate-oriented Mayor Mike Duggan has incessantly sought to transfer public resources to private capitalist interests that are dominating the economy of Detroit including Dan Gilbert, the Illitch family and the leading financial institutions, such as Chase Bank.Lessons From the Detroit July 1967 Rebellion and Prospects for Social Transformation
As a direct result of the pandemic, the “development” model of business office space availability, entertainment, sports, high-rent apartments, expensive condominiums and tourism has been in severe decline. The much championed casino hotels have reopened recently with monumental reductions in allowed capacity….
