This Thursday at 5:30pm the Community Relations Commission is hosting another meeting to discuss RPD’s use of force policy in City Hall Chambers.
Show up and share your story.
Especially if you have experience with how RPD exercises their use of force.
The City of Rockford’s administration should be held accountable for any error, danger, or negligence within the use of force policy.
It is important to differentiate the Winnebago County Sheriff’s office from the Rockford Police Department.
On August 7th of 2020 it was the Winnebago County Sheriff’s police force that used pepper spray on protestors at City Market. Including children who were within the vicinity.
Geno Washington and Joseph McCormick are two names we have of people who have died inside of the winnebago county jail. Joseph McCormick’s autopsy determined that he died of asphyxia. The findings of Geno Washington’s autopsy was not immediately released. It took seven months for the winnebago boone county integrity task force to release the statement that 35 year old Eugene Washington died as a result of sleep apnea.

The reason this is being brought to your attention is to remind you that this meeting is specifically in regard to the rockford police department’s use of force policy. However these police forces along with the mayor are working together to intimidate, harass, unlawfully arrest, suppress and punish those exercising their rights of free speech. Important to remember.
They want a public present to give insight.
Bring your mask and show up early to get a seat if you wish to speak.

Saturday, September 5 at 3 PM we will gather at Houdini Plaza to protest police brutality. After the standing protest we will march down College Ave. There will be a donation opportunity during the protest for black led charities.

On Saturday, September 12 from 6 PM to 8 PM, we will be hosting a peaceful protest and march starting at the band shell in downtown Port Washington to bring awareness to the students of color who have left the Port Washington school district because their voices weren’t being heard. We will speak to my experiences as a student of color in the school district and will be joined by guest speaker and local organizer, William Toney. We will post the march route the day of the event and ask that folks plan on marching on foot, not by caravan. We want to reiterate that this will be a peaceful event and that all attendees should wear a mask. Thank you for your support of this event.

CDC Issues Sweeping Temporary Halt On Evictions Nationwide Amid Pandemic

The Trump administration is ordering a halt on evictions nationwide through December for people who have lost work during the pandemic and don’t have other good housing options.
The new eviction ban is being enacted through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal is to stem the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak, which the agency says in its order “presents a historic threat to public health.”
It’s by far the most sweeping move yet by the administration to try to head off a looming wave of evictions of people who have lost their jobs or taken a major blow to their income because of the pandemic. Housing advocates and landlord groups both have been warning that millions of people could soon be put out of their homes through eviction if Congress does not do more to help renters and landlords and reinstate expanded unemployment benefits.
But this new ban, which doesn’t offer any way for landlords to recoup unpaid rent, is being met with a mixed response. First, many housing advocates are very happy to see it.
“My reaction is a feeling of tremendous relief,” says Diane Yentel, CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. “It’s a pretty extraordinary and bold and unprecedented measure that the White House is taking that will save lives and prevent tens of millions of people from losing their homes in the middle of a pandemic.”
That said, she adds that a move like this from Congress or the White House is “long overdue.” And she says with no money behind it, it kicks the can down the road….
The COVID Heroism of Cuban Doctors
Counter Punch, August 28, 2020- With Covid-19 roaring through the U.S., now is a good time to discuss Cuban health care. It’s about as different from the American variety as possible. It is not for profit. It is socialized. It does not first resort to expensive medical technology. Its doctors live among the people, like in Haiti after the earthquake, not in luxury hotels, like American doctors. It does not rely on the thinking that there is a pill for every ailment. It is successful. Cuba has suffered 88 deaths from covid, and the 3408 infected people have not gone bankrupt receiving care. To repeat, that’s because Cuban doctors and pharmaceutical entities are not in it for the money. Cuba’s astonishingly good health statistics derive from its emphasis on preventive medicine, something not stressed nearly enough in the U.S.

AUG. 21 UPDATE: YouTube restored Mesa Redonda’s account today affirming the account did not infringe on the Conditions of Service. No explanation was given.
But as President Miguel Diaz-Canel tweeted, “Those who don’t want the world to know about our vaccine blocked Cuban digital channels. Anyway, no one has been vaccinated and the needle prick is already hurting.”
As of 10 pm EDT, VTV’s account has not been restored. The blockade is real.
On Aug. 20, just ahead of programming about the start of clinical trials for Cuba’s COVID-19 vaccine, Soberana-01, YouTube management disabled Mesa Redonda’s channel. Mesa Redonda (Roundtable) airs Monday through Friday evenings on Cuban national television. Its international audience included more than 19,000 YouTube channel subscribers. Mesa Redonda is still streamed through Facebook and the Aug. 20 program can be viewed there.
