Milwaukee, November 29: Meet the youngest teacher from Cuba’s renowned Literacy Campaign

Hosted by The Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba

639 N 25th Street, Central United Methodist Church, Milwaukee, 7 P.M.

Hear and meet Griselda Aguilera Cabrera, the youngest teacher in Cuba’s world recognized Literacy Campaign of 1961 & featured in the film “Maestra.”

In 1961, revolutionary Cuba virtually ended adult illiteracy in one year. 100,000’s of students became teachers and partners with those who were not literate. Most of the literacy teachers were young women, and they were transformed by their experience. Featured in the renowned documentary “Maestra,” seven year old Griselda Aguilera Cabrera was the youngest of these teachers. “This experience was seared into me with such force that it defined my future. From that moment, I decided to dedicate my life to teaching.”

Now retired from her career as an educator, Griselda works with the Cuban Psychology Society’s Working Group on Identity and Diversity, in activities to combat homophobia, racial discrimination, prejudice against people with HIV/AIDS, and violence against women and girls. Cuba has meanwhile shared its teaching program, helping 8 million adults to become literate worldwide.

A dynamic and exciting presence, Griselda will speak in Spanish with interpretation in English, along with the award winning short documentary “Maestra.”

Come hear her story and that of a generation of young people, particularly women, whose lives were changed by helping to uplift the education of an entire nation.

Why Close the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility?
Conditions at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF) are out of step with Wisconsin values. Not only have conditions at the prison been deplorable for years, but the very notion of locking up people struggling with parole and mental health issues is at odds with common sense approaches to justice. MSDF was built in 2001 as a temporary detention facility for people on parole, probation, and extended supervision who allegedly committed violations in their rules of supervision. In the last 16 years, thousands of individuals, convicted of no new crime, have been re-incarcerated at MSDF—over sixty percent of them black men. This practice of “crimeless revocations” exacerbates racial inequities in Milwaukee and Wisconsin, and the inhumane conditions at MSDF violate basic human rights and defy our notions of justice and freedom. The #CLOSEmsdf Campaign is led by EX-Prisoners Organizing (EXPO), a project of WISDOM, with the support of JustLeadershipUSA, community members, and local Wisconsin organizations. The campaign aims not only to close this facility, but reimagine how we invest in people caught in the penal system. MSDF is beyond reform and must be shuttered in order to build the stronger communities that Milwaukee and Wisconsin deserve.

Problems Facing People Incarcerated at MSDF
• Human rights violations, including: Poor ventilation, extreme heat, no outdoor recreation, 22 hours of lockdown per day, and no in-person visits.
• Excessive mistreatment and use of force against mentally ill people.
• Racial bias: African Americans were 12 times more likely to be sent to prison for crimeless revocation than whites in 2013.
• No due process: Revocation process gives significant discretion to DOC parole agents rather than criminal
courts, which makes it harder for people facing incarceration to fight that outcome.

Solutions
• Ending the practice of incarcerating people for minor rule violations of their supervision.
• Allow people facing revocation to remain in the community until their hearings.
• Shifting the “Alternatives to Revocation” beds to the community.
• Solve overcrowding issues in Wisconsin jails and prisons through policy changes such as bail reform and increased use of Treatment Alternatives and Diversion programs.
• Reinvest the excessive corrections spending toward workforce development training for formerly incarcerated
people and greater access to mental health professionals and clinics within the community.

This year, the movement has seen everything from the inauguration of arch-bigot Donald Trump to the toppling of racist confederate statues. It has responded in militant action to the attacks on migrants, the LGBTQ community, Black lives, and U.S. wars and sanctions abroad. We’ve watched in horror as colonized Puerto Rico and other oppressed nations suffer from global warming and genocidal policies, the murder of anti-racist activists and state repression of freedom fighters.

As the centennial of the Russian Revolution approaches, we are faced with an urgent need to unite and fight for our lives. The 50-year anniversary of Che Guevara’s martyrdom and the Newark Uprising offer critical lessons for going forward. Our comrades in the streets risking their lives to topple white supremacy need our support — a people’s army to back them up.

Workers World Party invites you to attend our 2017 conference in the heart of Newark, NJ (a short train ride from NYC) — one of the largest and most impoverished working-class cities in the Northeast, as well as a historic site of resistance. Hundreds of freedom fighters from across the country will gather to meet and discuss where our movement goes from here.

Join us for dynamic workshops, plenaries, cultural performances and more. As the battle against white supremacy continues to intensify, we are strategizing a path forward in the fight for socialism.

ZANU-PF Youth League Statement: In Defense of the Revolution, People’s Rights

http://tinyurl.com/ydb6ceey

November 15, 2017
Kudzanai Chipanga Correspondent
Zimbabwe Herald

AS the youth of Zimbabwe and as the young people whose future will be determined by the actions taken in the present, we have noted with shock, displeasure and disappointment the Press statement of the Commander of the Defence Forces, General Constantino Guveya Chiwenga issued yesterday. We, as Zanu-PF Youth League, are a lion which has awakened and found its voice, therefore we will not sit idly and fold our hands whilst cheap potshots and threats are made against the legitimate and popularly elected leader of the revolutionary party Zanu-PF and Zimbabwe, His Excellency, Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe.

This statement is therefore issued without regret, fear or compunction. Defending the revolution and our leader and President is an ideal we live for and if need be it is a principle we are prepared to die for. From the outset we would like to make it clear that we have every respect for the armed forces in this country and cherish their role in protecting and safeguarding the country and its revolution.

We are, however, totally against the bulk of the press statement issued by General Chiwenga yesterday. We believe that the views he exposed are his personal opinions and not the collective view of the security forces as a whole. It is no secret that the security forces in Zimbabwe know their parameters and hence the international respect they earned wherever they have played, we therefore, address him directly and in kind.

International Solidarity Results In the Dropping Of Felony Charges For Durham Freedom Fighters, Struggle Continues To Have All Charges Dropped & To Build A People’s Tribunal

UPDATE: The district attorney said the felony charges haven’t been dropped. Keep making those phone and sending messages and sharing info about #DefendDurham

From: Workers World Party Durham Branch

Today Durham DA Echols decided not to pursue any felony charges against #DefendDurham defendants, including our comrades, for toppling the Confederate statue. Our movement is powerful. After dozens of unions & community organizations speaking out, hundreds of phone calls, thousands of emails flooding the DA, we have overcome. We still have to beat back the misdemeanor charges. Onwards now to the People’s Tribunal! If you would like to testify about crimes of white supremacy, or want to be involved with the Commission of Inquiry, please DM us. #SmashWhiteSupremacy
