VEA/NEA Statement on Racial Violence in Charlottesville, Virginia

Jim Livingston, president of the 50,000 member Virginia Education Association
Lily Eskelsen, president of the 3.2-million-member National Education Association

Sixty years ago, they burned crosses in Charlottesville in a black neighborhood and at the home of a white civil rights activist.

This past weekend, hate-filled bigots again descended on Charlottesville in a contemptible attempt to evoke fear and terror. In their wake, three were dead, many more injured, and the community left traumatized. The weapons they used to incite—torches, hateful slurs, threats—were despicable enough. Late in the day, one of their own used a car as a battering ram and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured 19 others. And two other heroes with the Virginia State Police providing safety services, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates, were killed when their helicopter crashed.

As teachers in the Virginia Education Association and National Education Association, we know our history. Words lead to action. Too many leaders in positions to know and do better have failed to counter white nationalist rhetoric; their reluctance to directly confront and call out racism at every turn contributed to what unfolded Saturday. Heyer, standing up for diversity and against intolerance, and Cullen and Bates, endeavoring to keep all safe, paid the ultimate price for a sickness that we must expose, confront, and overcome.

The VEA and the NEA stand with members of the Charlottesville community, and we offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives on Saturday. Educators bear the wounds collectively. Heather Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, formerly taught in the public schools and was a member of the Greene County Education Association. Karen Cullen, wife of Lt. Jay Cullen, is an elementary teacher and member of the Chesterfield Education Association. We mourn with them, and their families.

We know that children of all ages follow events such as those that occurred Saturday and have questions; some may feel traumatized. Members of the VEA and NEA have resources to assist teachers and community members, and we stand ready to offer any educational or crisis management assistance.

WW-MO Statement On Venezuela

http://www.workers.org/

WW-MO Party condemns Trump’s statements on Venezuela

Workers World-Mundo Obrero Party (USA) condemns the statements U.S. President Donald Trump made Aug. 11 against the people of Venezuela, especially his open threat to use the “military option,” that is, that U.S. military force will be used against the sovereign people of that country.

We promise to do everything possible to mobilize the U.S. population to demonstrate to stop any U.S. intervention in Venezuela.

WWP also condemns as blatant lies the U.S. president’s slander of the Bolivarian government, falsely accusing them of holding political prisoners and of being responsible for the deaths of Venezuelan inhabitants and of curtailing human rights.

On the contrary, it is the so-called opposition forces in Venezuela – those who are lined up with U.S. imperialism against the Venezuelan government, who have wreaked terror in the streets with the “guarimbas,” that is, violent demonstrations attacking supporters of the revolutionary government.

With his usual lying bluster, Trump demanded that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro release political prisoners. He dared to make this demand at the same time the U.S imprisons 2.3 million people, mostly Black, Latinx and Native. Those in U.S. prisons include many political activists and freedom fighters who have been in jail for more than three decades.

Regarding human rights, the Washington Post reported that 963 people were shot by police in 2016 in the USA, and that as of Aug. 13, some 611 have been killed in 2017 by the cops. Trump himself took the side of the worst fascist rats in the U.S. regarding the confrontation on Aug. 12 after anti-fascist counter-protesters were killed and injured in Charlottesville, Va., by Nazis and the Klan.

Thus it is the White House in Washington and not the Maduro government that is threatening human rights and repressing the population.

Although the Pentagon stated that it had not received any orders on Venezuela, we know that the U.S. Armed Forces was already preparing for an invasion. In June, the U.S. military held exercises that it called “Operation Tradewinds 2017” on the island of Barbados with 2,500 soldiers, 670 miles from the Venezuelan coast, and then on Trinidad and Tobago, just 373 miles away.

The U.S. military plans another exercise in November dubbed “Operation America United,” at a base in Brazil, near the borders with Peru and Colombia and quite close to the Venezuelan border.

Vice President Mike Pence is currently visiting Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama. It would be no surprise that he will “twist the arms” of those countries to favor military intervention in Venezuela, right after some of these countries – who have repeatedly opposed and condemned the Bolivarian government – rejected Trump’s Friday declaration, stating that they condemn any military measures and the use of force against Venezuela.

Since even his own White House staff doesn’t seem to know what this president will do or tweet next, there is no way others can be sure if his belligerent bluster against Venezuela will be turned into action. But we must take the threats against Venezuela seriously and will continue to explain to the U.S. working class the truth about the revolutionary Bolivarian government in Venezuela and to mobilize against any U.S. intervention against this sovereign country.

USA, Hands Off Venezuela!

Long Live the Bolivarian Revolution!

Viva the National Constituent Assembly!

MTEA President: Educators Denounce Racist Attack in Charlottesville

http://mtea.weac.org/2017/08/12/mtea-president-educators-denounce-racist-attack-in-charlottesville/

The Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association,  http://mtea.weac.org/, denounces the racist terror attack in Charlottesville, VA. We stand with the resistance to the neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups that have swarmed the streets of this normally quiet college town. Make no mistake, these groups have existed in one form or another for generations in the US, but the racist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic language and actions of the Trump administration have emboldened white supremacists. It is a short walk from a Trump rally to the proto fascist violence in Charlottesville.

The MTEA recognizes that the very same administration planning draconian cuts to public urban school districts, like Milwaukee, that serve primarily black and brown children would be paving the way for the kinds of right wing violence we are seeing in Virginia. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the racist terror attack. We stand in solidarity with all those who oppose racism and neo-Nazism.

CWA: We Reject the Hatred and Bigotry of White Supremacists

https://cwa-union.org/news/releases/cwa-we-reject-hatred-and-bigotry-of-white-supremacists-0

Sunday, August 13, 2017

Members of the Communications Workers of America reject the vile actions and rhetoric of the white supremacists who paraded their hatred and bigotry this weekend in Charlottesville, Va. These evil actions, which President Trump couldn’t be bothered to condemn, instead offering a weak “violence on many sides” throwaway line, resulted in the tragic death of a young woman and injuries to many more.

Our government’s failure to condemn these evil people emboldens them, and sets us back in our determination to realize our goal of a nation where all people are respected, all have opportunity and all are full participants in our democracy.

CWA members are determined to bring about that nation, and we will continue to work with our allies to ensure that hatred, racism and bigotry have no place in our nation. We also commend the law enforcement officers who stood together to end this demonstration of hate. https://cwa-union.org/

UE CONDEMNS TRUMP’S TOLERANCE FOR THE WHITE SUPREMACIST ATTACKS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

UE CONDEMNS TRUMPS TOLERANCE FOR THE
WHITE SUPREMACIST ATTACKS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE

White supremacists and neo-Nazi organizers emboldened by Trump’s presidency see the Trump era as their time and Trump has done absolutely nothing to discourage them. UE condemns the attack on Charlottesville VA and promises to continue organizing in our workplaces and communities to fight racism, fascism and bigotry. .

A young woman and two police officers were senselessly killed as a result of the torrent of hate that white supremacists unleashed on Charlottesville this past weekend. It was absolutely unconscionable that Trump refused to condemn the hate filled actions and rhetoric of those responsible and instead blamed “many sides” for the violence that caused death and destruction in Charlottesville.

Trump’s failure to call out neo-Nazi’s and other bigots is not surprising. Some of the supremacists even chanted “Heil Trump.” Trump’s campaign of hate against non-whites, threats to punch opponents in the face, and his plan to deport immigrants and build walls embolden the very forces which were unleashed on Charlottesville. Trump is simply unfit to be the President of the United States.

We should not lose sight of the reason why white supremacists unleashed their fury on the people of Charlottesville. They were protesting the city’s decision to remove the statue of a Confederate leader, a traitor, who believed African-American people should be enslaved.

UE stands with the people of Charlottesville and all of their allies who marched against the bigots and bravely stood up to hatred, racism, and violence. Our union was founded on the principles of equality for all — regardless of who you are, where you came from, or what you believe. UE local leaders and members enforce these principles in our workplaces and communities every day. We reject Trump’s pandering to white supremacists and hatred which is contrary to the core principles of UE.

On behalf of our union, we send our sympathies to the family of the young woman who lost her life fighting for justice and to the two officers who died in the line of duty on August 12. We will mourn their deaths and fight like hell to stamp out the scourge of racism, bigotry, and hate.

(WASHINGTON) – The following is a statement by the Teamsters in response to the violence propagated by white nationalists and neo-Nazis during their planned rally in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday that led to the deaths of counter-protester Heather Heyer, as well as state Troopers Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates.

“The Teamsters were saddened and disgusted by the behavior of hatemongers this weekend that resulted in the deaths of a woman standing up against them as well as two others who were involved in protecting the safety of all those present.

“In the face of such ignorance and malice, all of us must speak out and show unwavering resolve that makes it clear that all Americans are entitled to the same rights and protections, and that those who try to impede them will be dealt with swiftly and forcefully under the law.

“This union has long been a leader in fight for civil rights. It was more than 52 years ago that Viola Liuzzo, the wife of a Teamsters’ business agent in Michigan, was murdered by members of the KKK in Alabama while standing up for equal voting rights for African Americans. She was a martyr in the fight for justice. Tragically, Ms. Heyer joined her and became one herself on Saturday.

“It is time for this madness to stop. The Teamsters pledge to stand up against such despicable acts of hatred and intolerance. Only then will we truly become the great nation we all expect us to be.”
