Milwaukee, September 6, 2020: 100 Days of Protesting: A Wellness Event

Milwaukee Action Intersection

Freedom is a constant struggle. Black Lives Matter activists have been hitting the streets in Milwaukee since the end of May, and September 6th is the 100 day mark. At the intersection of continued police violence against Black and brown communities, open wounds of intergenerational trauma, and other forms of oppression— this work can be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. It’s important to take care of our wellbeing, that’s why MAI presents a mind, body and spirit wellness event to celebrate the tremendous work involved and to cultivate resilience to endure (at least) 100 more days!

Please join us on Sunday, September 6th from 11am-2pm for a day of healing with healthy food, music, bodywork from massage therapists and other body healers, support from mental health and spiritual practitioners, and other kinds of self-care!

We also want to recognize the numerous organizers who continue to pour their time and soul into organizing Milwaukee’s movement(s), and we’ll have wellness packages for up to 15 organizers that YOU choose! To nominate a deserving leader please go to: https://forms.gle/5T89qHAqDspVtpUL6

Details on programming and wellness packages to come 🙂

We hope you’ll join us!

Madison, August 29, 2020: Justice for Jacob Blake

Justice for Jacob Blake

On August 23rd, Jacob Blake was held by his shirt and brutally shot 7 times in the back. Now five days later, the cop who shot him – Rusten Sheskey – walks free, on paid administrative leave, facing no consequences. The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation has the power to arrest and charge Rusten Sheskey. Instead, they decided to protect both the Kenosha Police Department and Jacob’s would-be killer. If the DCI was serious about upholding justice, they would immediately fire, arrest, and charge Rusten Sheskey with second degree manslaughter. The eyes of the country are on us right now – and we’re furious at the failing of the Department of Justice to defend Black and Brown lives. We demand Justice for Jacob Blake. Join us at 4:00pm at Library Mall to march because black lives matter.

Background Notes
Since 2000 the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana, Cuba has provided medical training for 29,000 doctors from 104 countries around the world. Many of them were provided full scholarships from the Cuban government including 196 graduates from medically underserved communities in the US.
Since 1960 Cuba has sent 500,000 of its own health personnel around the world to provide long term and emergency healthcare in 164 countries – going to places where doctors were either non-existent or in short supply.
On August 29th 2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans. Cuba offered to send an emergency medical brigade of 1500 doctors to the city. The government of George W Bush ignored the offer. The brigade went to the mountains of Pakistan instead in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. They were named the Henry Reeve Brigade in honor of a young US citizen who fought and died alongside Cubans in their revolutionary struggle for independence from Spain in the 19th century.
During the COVID-19 crisis Cuba has sent 38 emergency medical brigades to 31 countries in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and even Italy and Andorra in Europe. Cuba is willing to send its own doctors and specialists to the US but again none have been requested.

Vernon Hills, IL September 7, 2020: Sit In For Justice

Sit In For Justice

In protest of active shooter Kyle Rittenhouse’s extradition hearing being pushed out and the judicial system white gloving his case, betraying not only due process but also the citizens of this country, we will be having a peaceful, silent sit in.

This protest is going to be geared more toward systematic oppression, injustice, and the blatant disregard for innocent life lost rather than treating this intentional, disturbing, and hateful crime exactly the way it should be.

We will also be honoring the lives lost to this senseless violence, those lost to police brutality, and those suffering from deep rooted systematic oppression and racism.

We will be leading this with light, love, and a direct demand for justice and change.

Write your senators and tell them: Vacation time is over. Tell them to come back to Washington and pass aid for our states, cities, towns and schools now

Mitch McConnell has taken the Senate on another vacation. Yes, that’s two vacations in as many months, while public service workers are battling the coronavirus day in and day out, often putting our lives at risk to keep our communities running smoothly.

What’s worse, McConnell and Senate Republicans have decided to “hit pause” on aid our communities desperately need to maintain essential public services and keep public service workers on the job. While McConnell and his friends in the Senate take another break and refuse to pass aid for states, cities, towns and schools, public service workers are receiving pink slips at an alarming rate, and more will be on the chopping block.

Write your senators and tell them: Vacation time is over. Tell them to come back to Washington and pass aid for our states, cities, towns and schools now.

More than 100 days have passed since the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bold plan that meets the scale of the health and economic crises ravaging our communities.

As public service workers, we put our communities first. We rush in when disaster strikes, and we don’t hide or go on vacation when our communities need us. We should expect the same out of those we elect to represent us in Congress.

We need to continue to make our voices heard. We cannot let up, and in November, we will vote out of office those senators who refused to help our communities and protect our jobs when our communities needed us most.

Write your senators and tell them: Vacation time is over. Tell them to come back to Washington and pass aid for our states, cities, towns and schools now.

In solidarity,

Lee Saunders
AFSCME President
