Obama Should Follow Cuba’s Lead and Free People in U.S. Prisons

Obama Should Follow Cuba’s Lead and
Free People in U.S. Prisons

The organizers of Days of Action for the End of the Blockade of Cuba in Washington, DC, (Sept. 16-18) are calling on President Obama to follow Cuban President Raul Castro’s lead and release some of the more than 2.5 million prisoners currently in jails and prisons in the United States.
To mark Pope Francis’s upcoming visit to Cuba, the Cuban government has announced the release of 3,522 people in that country’s jails. This humanitarian gesture will include prisoners over 60, younger than 20, those with chronic illnesses, women and those close to their release dates.
“Why can’t Obama follow the Cuban example before Pope Francis continues on his tour to the US on Sept. 22?” asked Alicia Jrapko, a spokesperson for the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples, which is co-sponsoring the Days of Action in Washington this week. The goal is to pressure the United
States to end its failed blockade against Cuba. The United States, Jrapko pointed out, has the dubious distinction of having the largest per capita prison population in the world. US prisons are overflowing with people who are primarily incarcerated for nonviolent offenses, drug charges, or simply for being mentally ill and poor. Of these incarcerated there is a vast disproportionate number of people of color.
“As his presidency winds down, Obama could do the right thing by releasing an equal percentage of the prison population as the Cubans did,” agreed Gail Walker of IFCO/Pastors for Peace, another of the groups organizing the Days of Action. “Now that would be a humanitarian gesture that a war-torn world could appreciate and also a gesture of peace with justice to the visiting Pope. It would amount to freedom for tens of thousands of people.”
Obama could start by releasing political prisoners like:

  • Black activist and journalist Mumia Abu Jamal, whose health is in rapid decline from untreated Hepatitis C,
  • American Indian Movement leader Leonard Peltier, who just spent his 71st birthday in prison, and
  • Oscar Lopez Rivera, the Puerto Rican Independence activist who has spent 34 years in prison on conspiracy charges. After a recent visit to Oscar Lopez, the Governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro García Padilla stated: “His sentence, far too excessive, violates the most elemental principles of humanity, sensitivity and justice.”

Jan Susler, the lawyer of Oscar Lopez, and Rafael Cancel Miranda, the legendary fighter for Puerto Rican independence will be among the speakers on a human rights panel during a conference being held as part of the Days of Action for the End of the Blockade of Cuba Sept. 16-18.

Days of Action is co-sponsored by: IFCO/Pastors for Peace, Institute for Policy Studies,  International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity for the Peoples, National Network on Cuba and the Venceremos Brigade.

Milwaukee, September 18: Educators, Students and Communities Walking-In At Over 70 Schools and Growing

RSVP: http://stopmpstakeover.com/

On Friday, September 18, almost 60 public schools in Milwaukee will host “walk-ins” to celebrate and protect our public schools, and to share information with parents and community members about proposed public school takeovers.

The state legislature passed a plan to take over several public schools in Milwaukee. County executive Chris Abele is expected to appoint a commissioner this fall to oversee the takeover schools. The commissioner will then identify 1-3 schools this year to be taken over next year. Very few specifics are available. For example, we do not know how the commissioner’s salary will be funded, or how the schools will be chosen.

Community allies are organizing to fight the takeover and to stand up for public schools that welcome and serve all children.

Illinois/Wisconsin FIST Fund

http://www.gofundme.com/sf3j875c

Over the past year, the FIST (Fight Imperialism Stand Together) and Workers World Party branches in Illinois and Wisconsin have done a lot of work to introduce people to socialism. Now, we need some help.

We are looking to raise funds to send a group of IL/WI FIST and WWP members to the Workers World Party Conference in New York City from November 7-8 of this year.

Funds raised will help approximately 8 people (but perhaps more, as we’re still establishing who is able to go). The money raised will go toward travel from Illinois to New York, food, and any lodging expenses.

Milwaukee, September 24: History of Resistance: The Industrial Workers of the World organizing at Jimmy Johns, 2008-Present

History of Resistance: The Industrial Workers of the World organizing at Jimmy Johns, 2008-Present

From 2008 to the present, workers at Jimmy Johns have organized against one of the most vehemently anti-union franchises from the inside, challenging their bosses and using collective, direct action to fight for better working conditions and collective power. Come out to the Public House (co-operative bar, 815 E. Locust, Milwaukee) on Thursday, September 24th, 6:00-7:30 PM) to hear about how this happened, and is still happening. You will be able to hear about the conversations between co-workers, agitation around shared grievances, building a workplace committee and marches on the boss that built up worker strength in the Twin Cities from 2008-2010. There will also be information on the union-busting efforts when the campaign went public, retaliation, organizing response, and the spread of IWW organizing to Jimmy Johns at other cities. The event will also explore the nature of Jimmy Johns’ business that breed such resistance, implications of the campaign, and the differences between this grassroots, direct-action organizing on the shop floor and contemporary fast food organizing in the “Fight for 15” efforts.

Workers at Jimmy Johs organized as part of the Industrial Workers of the World, so their fight was also an effort to abolish capitalism and create a better world. Yet revolutionary aims wasn’t just a matter of long-term ambitions, it informed active, daily activity to challenge capitalism on the shop floor.

Following the presentation there will be a participatory discussion on implications of this history for present day organizing in Milwaukee. Please, come with questions and an interest in talking.

There is an identical fb page produced by the Public House, it’s located at: https://www.facebook.com/events/695477077254778/ Only one event.

Ms. Maria Hamilton to Hillary Clinton: What About Our Children Profiled and Killed By Police?

Earlier this afternoon (September 10) Ms. Maria Hamilton, Founder of Mothers for Justice spoke with someone from Hillary Clinton‘s campaign and they said they are aware of Dontre Hamilton’s case and will address the concerns and the issues that face the mothers and families of those who day in and day out have to deal with the stream of constant injustices.

Ms. Maria heard them by phone, now she wants to hear that from Hillary Clinton herself at this evening’s Women for Hillary event today at UWM INSIDE IN THE WISCONSIN ROOM OF THE UWM STUDENT UNION. It was moved indoors because of the weather. Doors open at 4 p.m. and she is scheduled to speak at 5:30 p.m.

Maria Hamilton is the mother of Dontre Hamilton. He was murdered April 30, 2014 at Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee, WI by a now former Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney who shot Dontre 14 times.

PRESS RELEASE

Milwaukee, WI- Mothers for Justice and The Coalition for Justice are looking forward to hearing the message Hillary Clinton has for mothers and families in Milwaukee.

“We know Hillary Clinton plans to “discuss her record of fighting for women and families,” but will this message include mothers who’ve lost children and loved ones that were profiled and killed by police misconduct. We need a President that is going to fight for all people that are and have been killed for not doing anything wrong but being Black. All murders and police who take life because of color barriers or hate. Should be held accountable for their actions,” Maria Hamilton, Founder of Mothers for Justice said.

Maria Hamilton’s son Dontre Hamilton was murdered April 30, 2014 at Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee, WI. A now former Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney shot Dontre Hamilton 14 times.

Has she addressed moms like Maria Hamilton who’ve lost their sons to police violence? If not this is a perfect opportunity for her to address Mothers for Justice and assure them that if she is elected she has a plan to better police accountability and transparency along with hiring independent prosecutors for these type of cases.

We have contacted her campaign officials and are awaiting a response to a private meeting. If we do not receive a response to that request we will indeed make our presence known at her Women for Hillary event tomorrow.
