Lebanon in Mourning as Beirut Explosions Death Toll Hits 100

Beirut (AMS) – Lebanon is in mourning as the death toll of the huge blasts which took place in Beirut Port on Tuesday hit 100, with thousands more injured and many others are still missing.

Until now over 4,000 people have been injured and over 100 have lost their lives. Our teams are still conducting search and rescue operations in the surrounding areas,” the Lebanese Red Cross added in a statement on Wednesday.

“What we are witnessing is a huge catastrophe. There are victims and casualties everywhere,” local media quoted the head of Lebanon’s Red Cross George Kettani.

Rescue workers dug through the rubble overnight looking for survivors of the massive warehouse explosion that devastated many parts of Beirut.

Hospitals were still overrun with wounded people and others searching for loved ones, with pages springing up online listing pictures of the missing and begging for information about their whereabouts.

Beirut governor Marwan Abboud told a local radio station that more than 100 people remain missing, including several firefighters. “Beirut has never gone through what it went through yesterday,” he said.

President Michel Aoun said 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been stored unsafely in a warehouse for six years.

He scheduled an urgent cabinet meeting for Wednesday and said a two-week state of emergency should be declared.

The country will observe an official period of mourning for three days from Wednesday.

President Aoun also announced that the government would release 100 billion lira (£50.5m; $66m) of emergency funds.

The Higher Defense Council held an urgent session late Tuesday, in which he declared Beirut a devastated city.

‘Friday Night Massacre’ at US Postal Service as Postmaster General—a Major Trump Donor—Ousts Top Officials

The following is a statement from Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law: “We are sounding an alarm regarding personnel changes, policy shifts and service disruptions happening inside the U.S. Postal Service on Louis DeJoy’s watch. The postal service lies at the heart of our democracy and is critical to the success of an unprecedented vote-by-mail system that is needed for a fair and effective 2020 election season. The postal service helps ensure that our nation’s most vulnerable communities are receiving medications and resources during the pandemic. It is also critical to the efforts to achieve a full and accurate 2020 Census. “The Trump administration’s intentions are clear. Louis DeJoy, a Trump donor with no experience inside the postal service, has been installed to cause chaos and disruption at a time when the timely delivery of mail could not be more critical.”

Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, warned what occurred Friday is designed to weak the Postal Service, slow vote-by-mail, and disrupt the 2020 Census….

As the Post notes in its reporting, the reshuffling of top managers and executives—as well as a hiring freeze and push for early retirements—”worried postal analysts, who say the tone of DeJoy’s first eight weeks and his restructuring have recast the nation’s mail service as a for-profit arm of the government, rather than an essential service.”

Detroit “We Can’t Breathe” Protests Continue for 70 Days In a Row ….

Detroit Still Rallying-Marching Against Police Brutality and Federal Troops: On Fri. Aug. 7, 2020 after more than 70 straight days of actions since May 29, people continued to take to the streets this time again in downtown. The gathering began at the McNamara Federal Building at 7:00pm. After a series of youth speakers, the crowd moved through various areas of downtown including the largely deserted LCA area, Woodward avenue to Grand Circus Park and then back to the Federal headquarters. Under the banner of Detroit Will Breathe, these protests have occurred in many neighborhoods and business districts. A heavy focus over the last week is to demand that federal agents welcomed by the corporate-imposed mayor and police chief immediately withdraw from the city. Demonstrators have condemned the shooting deaths of three African Americans by cops in July. (Photos by Abayomi Azikiwe, Pan-African News Wire).
